Any thoughts/local knowledge appreciated.
There's not much in it really Clink, the second one will give you a few more options with regard to riding. Both near to the coast although the first one's obviously at the coast. For an all round outdoor base the second one in Dol' would be my bet.
Cheers for that. Anyone else?
My suggest - www.rhibo-cottage.co.uk, stayed there this year, really nice and quite and in the middle of no where.
That looks great Rochey - but needs to sleep 4 adults and 2 kids
Main bedroom is big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids (sofa bed), spare bedroom 2 single beds.
Cost £500 in mid Aug.
What are the views like from each. When i'm on holiday i sometimes like to sit and watch the world.
We have stayed just N of Porthmadog and about a kilometre away from Dolserau. For family holidays - beach, small walks, things to see both are good but for biking then nr Dolgellau has got to win out. For families you have the the Mawddach Trail - bike across the woooden bridge and get an ice cream in Barmouth. From were we stayed I biked small lanes across to Coed y Brenin for a mix of natural and trail centre. You also have easy access to Climax (and the Alternative energy centre for the non-bikers). The Pont Scethin circuit as one of the best natural routes you can do. Sustrans Route 82 with Cadair Idris on one side and the peninisula on the other is a fantastic road ride. The panaroma walk, and the precipice walk are superb for family walks. Cadair Idris as one of the best mountain circuits in britain.
Tho Harlech castle is superb, Port Merion is a good day out and Snowdonia is fantastic. But they are only about 40mins from Dolgellau.
Also worth noting is that Pandy has a garden - Tyn Llwyn has a fast flowing river - what age are your kids. If they are less than teen age that alone would decide it for me!
Enjoy - Wales is a fantastic holiday destination with kids - we were in Brecon this year with our youngest (who is now 24 !) and it was still fantastic.
I appreciate your thoughts Steve - great feedback.
You're best bet is staying at the holiday cottage near Dolgellau, because that's very close to all the biking trails in the Coed-y-Brenin - if you want to get a fair amount of riding in.
Have stayed at Glyn-yr-aur: www.glyn-yr-aur.com high up in the hills in the Coed. Really nice owners, sleeps 6 and cheaper than most places. Great views of Rhinogs. Close to trails, walking routes, and rivers. Good access to Cader Idris, Bala Lake, Lake Vyrnwy, and northern Snowdonia aswell.
Owners have just brought new cottage - http://www.tynant.me.uk/index.htm on to market that sleeps up to 10 (4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms no less), bit more pricey £700 per week. But in between Barmouth and Dolgellau, so you're close to the beach, mountains and biking trails. There's a river behind the house which is popular with families for swimming. Big garden. Great place.

Thanks mtb2020 - booked tonight! 😀
Fab, it's great round there, and the owners are really nice, but they're about 8 miles away from there.
I don't know the area around the first cottage, so will be biased, but the second location is one of my favourite areas ON EARTH. And I have travelled a fair bit.
Even driving through makes for a fabulous experience.
