[#2326988]

I live in Huddersfield and my wife is working on Monday so will try and get out on my bike for the first time in 2 months (been ill).
I have the choice of the Peak District, Dalby, Gisburn or any areas in-between. A trail centre, while not something I often go to would be good as if I can't cope with the riding (still not 100%) it wouldn't be far back to the car.
The reason I ask is that a friend went to Lee Quarry when there was snow and it was unrideable - a bit of local knowledge about local cOnditions would be helpful to avoid a wasted trip.

If you want to invite me onto your ride I would be grateful but I will be very very beginner like slow (uphill at least, not downhill mwahaha!!!)
Thanks all.

hi robdob! I cant invite you on a ride as im actually down in laaahndan! However having been a northerner once I can make a couple of suggestions. for places near you?

a) Wharncliffe woods in Sheffield, Ive only ridden DH there but there are xc trails as well and you can also link the DH's with a ride back up the hill via a fireroad

b) Otley Chevin / Stainburn Forest - Its pretty tech and quite steep but its quite good in poor weather and quite short (if very steep in places!) its also easy to follow the routes.

I wouldnt go to Gisburn as I would imagine its in bits! When I left up north yesterday virtually all the snow had gone so I would reckon that Lee Quarry would be a safe bet.

Let us know where you go!

Ooh I forgot about Stainburn. Been there a couple of times and will probably be well drained. Not too far away too.

Last time I went to Wharncliffe it was a muddy hell, don't fancy going unless I get confirmation it's a lot better, or better still we have a nice hot summer to dry it out!!!

No more so than anywhere else. There's been a lot of repair work done to the top sections over the last few months. Lee Quarry isn't too bad weather wise either, pretty much all the snow has gone, little bit of ice in places.

Might even venture up to Gisburn this weekend to ride myself.

To be fair Gisburn is a bit of a trek to get to if it's going to be a mudfest.

Hit the north preview ride. I'm doing it basically to talk harry into becoming a Yorkshireman.

Sorry found it on HTN website but sounds like I'd be needing to keep up with a load of race whippets. Eeeek.

Don't go to wharncliffe, it is a muddy hell at the moment and in xc terms for more of the year than not. The trail was never funded/designed to be all weather so suffers badly.

It's more the riding up and along I'm bothered about. I have the lung capacity of a small newt after quite a serious bout of flu and non stop cold/cough for 5 weeks.

We were at Wharny today (with most of Sheffield, it seemed - never seen the place so busy) and it was, as previously stated, a mudfest. Some of the downhill stuff was okay but the XC was a sticky, gloopy mess. Even the fire roads in places were a slidy nightmare. Not recommended at the mo. ๐Ÿ™
