i think from memory they are 1 pot hydros (as in 1 piston pushed the disk on the the other pad.) PITA to set up.

but the sets i have set up/used have always worked until i upgraded

I have these on my 29er. Chain reaction were selling them off in the flood damage sale. They are fine. They are two pot NOT one pot.
For the price I paid (£35 an end) I would definately buy again.
I too read the crap reviews and so far they are not justified.

i use them on my xc hardtail,
they aren't 1 pot at all, 2 pot
I bought them off here about 2 years ago,
never had to do anything to them,
plenty powerful enough (well I've never felt out of depth with them) and have a reach/power adjustment which is nice,

easy to set up as they are postmount,
they are paired with shimano discs
they just work (touches wood)

edit; yup like CHB I was tempted to buy another set in the crc sale
any brake is bad if they are set up badly, I don't know how easy they are to bled, never had to, the reservoir is neatly tucked in behind the handlebar clamp, this might make it fiddly to bled though. I'm sure I'll find out soon now 🙂

Would they be better than the Nine? I'm familiar with the latter but have been offered El Caminos at a keen price (the Nines are priced very sensibly too in Classifieds when they appear). Not bothered about the weight, more about lack of maintenance, reliability and quietness.

Yeah i've got them on the HT and they work well. Plenty powerful enough for my needs and to be fair i tend to hit corners at speeds which needs to be scrubbed quite quickly.

Bought a used set off here. Arrived and were absolutely horrible, rattly, tatty, tacky crap. They never saw the bike before being sold again, so not sure whether they would have actually stopped it. Not a patch on the set of 9's I run on my 29er.

been using a pair for 2 or 3 years, no problems at all, pads are always coming up in sales very cheap. no maintainance issues at all in that time. that is all.

I think I'll stick to the Nines then. Had a set (when I worked at LBS) untouched for yonks (the Trek-specific mount on stays) and it worked once cleaned and bled.

Mine were OK - never felt as instantly powerful as the Hayes 9's they replaced. I also had to bleed the front one about 5 times before it really started to get power (you could not endo/lock up at all at first).
The front remained 'down' on power compared to the rear, despite 185mm/160mm disc sizings.
Levers were nice.
I bought mine in the CRC flood sale for (IIRC) £20-30 per end.
The bike got nicked after 6 months, so no long term idea.

I think your mind was made up already 🙂
bungie review is of a brake he has never used, brilliant stw gold 😀
