[#1849284]

We've just been into Halfords to size up a Boardman road bike for my wife (her bike2work scheme is run through them).

Both the boardman and Halfords website says it comes with pedals, but the n0b in the shop insisted it didn't. I know there only cheap ones with clips, but my wife can't use spd's so want these cheap ones.

What regulations etc should I quote when we go to collect it?

can't you just take a printout of the page where it states pedals are included?

Just tell them, 'no pedals, we no buy bike'. I doubt they'll want to lose a good sale for the sake of a couple of quid.

First off, that sounds very odd them not putting some cheapo pedals on for you. Usually there is a new set lying around somewhere.

Secondly however, im afraid they are right and you are wrong. The website is NOT the same as the store, the prices are different, the stock comes from the main warehouse and not from the individual stores. We dont even get told about price differences until a customer comes in.

Also, as far as i can see both halfords and boardmans website show the bikes without pedals. In fact to quote halfords website on pedals gives you "# Pedals: NA "

had another look, i can see where the pedal thing is coming from. The womens bikes apparently do come with pedals whereas the mens dont ?

Either way, the website is not the same as the store.

You could always say "Put on some pedals or cancel the order." Im sure they will understand 😉

yesiamtom - I'm afraid you are incorrect, see here;

halfords website

and more importantly, the boardman website (which is a company not owned by Halfords, so whether its from the store or online makes no difference
boardman bikes

I can understand the halford website being different to the shop, but so far as Boardman spec is concerned. I'd prob be less bothered if the bloke who we initially chatted to was not such a tool; telling us the frame we were trying was a medium when indeed a small, then saying it was better to get a smaller frame thean you needed so you could have the saddle higher and get more lights/lock brackets on etc! Never mind the fit!

It will have somewhere "specs subject to change"

We use to have it all the time in the shop, they don't have to do anything for you.

C2W wise your screwed for deals on bits really.

yes sorry, topangarider. I looked up the mens bike not the womens. Checked it and you are correct.

The salesman sounds like a right bellend. If it were me i would just go and say your cancelling the order and go to another store. Im sure they will happily stick pedals on if they get an extra 500-1000 quid in the kitty.

I'm pretty sure it should come with pedals anyway, Halfords generally give you a little bag with pedals and reflectors in. The ones you get are absolute gash and not worth 50p, not even fit for road use, and they go rattle faster than you'd probably believe so you're not actually missing out at all, though.

I saw a nice cannondale being ridden around london with those 50p pedals (that's how much they cost to a bike shop - can't imagine what they're made for). So wrong.

Trust me - I would go to the lbs if I could, but her employer is ties into Halfords.

Ok - so I prob won't get them, there's nothing I can do, and they're prob gash anyway.

Can anyone recommend some flats that don't look stupid on a road bike (and pref come in white?!)

Cheers

Yeah as people have said specs do change without notice so from that point of view they don't need to do anything, but most shops would find something to put on for you.

I once bought a bike that came with SPDs. Went to pick it up with normal trainers on. Asked them to fit a set of matching white DMR V8s, expecting to pay extra, but they gave me the SPDs and told me the V8s were a 'Christmas present' (it was December)! T'was an Evans as well.

Halfords can afford a pair of ****ing pedals. Have a word with the manager.

halfords are very sticky when it comes to c2w 'extras'. They wouldn't let me have 30p on top of my allowance (or even pay it myself) of £1000 to be able to pick up what I wanted. I think £15 on £700 might be harder to blag

CRC are selling Wellgo V8 copies for £8. I wouldn't get stressed over that much if they won't give you any. Remember how much you're saving on the Bike to Work in the first place! 🙂

If they say no, roll around on the floor kicking and screaming demanding some pedals. That might work. I've seen children in supermarkets do it, and they are often rewarded with sweets.

Just as a matter of curiosity...why is this 'false advertising' as opposed to 'bloke in halfords has got it wrong/made a mistake/was having a bad day'?

I would bring it to the attention of readers of a bike forum, and perhaps mention you beat the chap in halfords round the head with a bike pump, a short mtb pump that is ,somebody should be able to offer advice.

Throw in a saniflo and Ian Huntly for extra ooomph,

Make sure the pedals come with reflectors, as if you're provided with them they have to have reflectors fitted by law, me thinks.

UK bikes used to have to be supplied with pedals as part of BS 6102:2 - now what the newer CEN (EN 14781?) standards demand is another matter...

We certainly used to have to supply cheapo plastic pedals as standard on bikes which didn't have any (e.g. high end stuff where you would fit your own choice of pedals) to make them compliant. Same as with bells and the reflector set.
