...what's it do?
Just replaced the knackered bearings and removed and replaced the grubscrew, but no idea what it does!

from memory doesn't it stop the split spring ring from sliding round?

It's the other one, underneath where the cassette lives. I thought it buts up against one of the bearings, but when I screwed it back in it didn't seem to touch anything.....
