[Closed] Good Camping, Good Riding, where do you go

[#3558679]

Just interested to know where the STWers go camping that also incorporates good riding routes.

On another thread Burns farm near Keswick sounds popular which I guess would be a great base for Whinlatter, Borrowdale Bash and Skiddaw.

We use to camp in Betws-y-Coed behind the station for Penmachno and the Marin (but I believe it got taken over and made into a full caravan site).

So where do you go and what do you recommend for weekend or weeks camping/riding for the year ahead?

We spent most of last year visiting trail centres and camping. Lanefoot Farm in Keswick is good, there is a bridleway two minutes down the road that takes you straight into Whinlatter. It's a bit of a slog on the way there but ace on the way back!

Plenty of campsites near CYB, Torrent Walk is very popular but best avoided on bank holidays.

Pexton Moor Farm campsite for Dalby. It's located right on the entrance to the forest so you can jump on your bike and be at the trail head in less than 5 minutes. There's also a good pub down the road that does a great steak and ale pie with a pint of Black Sheep! Again, best avoided on bank holidays!

Any alternatives for Penmachno?

Love that place, we normally pitch on the tiered hilly bit and het the fire on.

Love camping but only on good days!

Heres a bad spot on a bad day near Fort will pithing tent in rain after riding all day and feeling knackered! Not happy
[IMG] [/IMG]
Heres the next day a few miles down the road near Glencoe village in the Red Squirrel camp site. An altogether much better experience ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh good stuff guys, like the suggestion of Torrent walk and also Pexton farm near Dalby. Reminds me of when I went to the world cup a couple of years ago and stayed in the weirdest B&B right in the forest ๐Ÿ™‚

Any suggestions on Lancashire/Yorkshire?

Pencelli Castle campsite in Pencelli, nr Brecon. Lovely site, nice pub down the road, more nice puns down the canal, and you can ride The Gap from the door/tentflap

Also stayed at a nice campsite in Reeth in the Yorks Dales, great riding and pubs again.

Sykeside in the lakes, just south of Brothers Water (between Ullswater and Kirkstone Pass). Handy for Patterdale / Glenridding so a good base for any rides around Ullswater, Helvellyn, High Street etc.

Be aware though that at the campsite there is absolutely no mobile phone, radio, or tv reception. That is a positive for me though. As is the nice pub.

Northcountryboy, where was that riding shot? Doesn't look like any of the trails I've ridden in that area, none of the obvious ones at least...

My contribution - Glen Quoich, Cairngorms.

Riding there:

Does anyone know a good 2 day route in Northumberland?
I know it's good walking up there but this year I'd like to do an overnight bike trip

Nobody's mentioned Gower yet...?

Can't recommend a specific campsite (I only live 20 miles away) but loads dotted about and 2 or 3 days worth of MTBing to be had on the peninsula.

The biggest problem is finding sites that take same sex groups.

Cae Gwyn is good for CyB
Knight Stainforth is good for Settle / Horton / Three Peaks

We stayed at Coniston Old Hall for the last few years... the riding from the tent is brilliant, Grizdale, Dunnerdale, Walna Scar... site is a bit rowdy but that suited us anyway and one 5 mins cycle from Coniston for mucho Ale.

The jocks are just rubbing our faces in it though.

Didn't realise campsites had a problem with same sex groups, is that to prevent boozing and rowdiness? Or are campsite owners all homophobes?

Glen Nevis always seems to keep a lid on that sort of thing, I got a tap on the side of the tent from a warden because I was talking on my phone after 11. Good night's sleep guaranteed at least! (until someone starts snoring of course..)

Ian, this seems to be the case in the Lakes, cos it's so busy. They think they can charge what they want, and can also be as fussy as they want.

Halse Farm campsite, Winsford, for loads of Exmoor rides. Found it when our daughter was a bairn, then a couple of years later STW ran an Exmoor article and liked the campsite - lots of bikers there now! Some excellent beers / nosh in Winsford and nearby.

Ha not Winsford Cheshire then ๐Ÿ˜†

I've heard the Winsford down south is quite a lovely place, hadn't thought of Exmoor or any further south than Long Mynd.

How about Cotswalds, what's that like?

Currently planning a trip to the lakes and I'm warming to camping over near Dalby as I have wedding back home in Wakefield early June so could go on from there.

This.

The site is a bit 'glampy' (it has wifi FFS!), but location is great (and as mentioned the village pub is more than decent - good food too).

For SW we go to to poolbridge campsite nr Porlock. Its basic but You can light fires and you have exmoor to ride, plus on the way out you pass the quantox which would be rude to ignore.

Hi 13floormonk riding shot is climbing back up from Kinlochleven before heading back down the Devils staircase to Glencoe. You can see my faster fitter mate pushing his bike as it no longer had a rear mech attatched to it!
It was a nice day tho ๐Ÿ˜†

I've found quite a few campsites can be funny if its an all male group. The worst by a long way was the site in Hayfield. Apparently Doris, or whoever the lady was who took my booking shouldn't have. They were considering just not letting us on, but I did have a booking....

we were all in our mid 30's and reasonably sensible.. no more annoying than the kids running round.

Anyhoo.. as IHN said Pencelli, or Bodnant in Llanwrust for Penmachno/Marin type action

or both and make a week of it..

How about Cotswalds, what's that like?

The Cotswolds are lovely, and have some great riding, but surprisingly few campsites.

There's one at Hailes Abbey Fruit Farm which is pretty good though. Easy to put together some good rides from the door, and you can have campfires ๐Ÿ™‚

For some South Downs riding try Washcamp at Washington or Alfriston for some East end South Downs & Friston Forest. For Exmoor we used Westermill farm - right on the banks of the Exe - lovely site. Keld bunkhouse is also good for Yorkshire Dales routes, the have a small, very welcoming campsite too.
