So as part of the 24" build for my son I'm wondering if I can go tubeless. I can't quite justify the Stans Crest 24" rims at SEVENTY QUID each, so I'm considering giving ghetto tubeless a go with the original rims that Carrera used (this is a Blast 24 based build). If I grab a roll of 3M/Gorilla/whatever tape and wrap it around the rim a few times, what are the chances that it will work with a suitable tyre? (I hear Rocket Rons will work on Crests)
The worst that happens is you spend a couple of hours fettling and only end up with a sticky rim.
Worth a shot...
I would have thought it would work fine.
I'd use a 20" tube.
I made this vid for fatbike rims but same principal should get you there...
Is the split tube thing really the only way to seal on a non-UST rim, or will a pile of tape work well enough?
Just sorted some non UST mavic 717's with a wrap of Stan's tape, a valve and Stan's fluid. Used my pop bottle compressor to pop some beaver's on. Jobs a good 'un so far.
Gorilla tape works well, as long as you properly degrease the rim. I also used a hair dryer to make it stick better.
Tyres currently still on my mates bike with no leaks etc since last August.
Both my kids bikes are tubeless with gorrilla tape and stans fluid. Lewis's rims are crests, but the ace20 before where tubeless too. Samuels 20 inch rims on his specialised rip-rock
I haven't had a lot of joy with just tape.
Split bmx tube is easy and secure in my experience BUT I reckon it shaves a couple of mm off the internal width of the rim if you do it the way I do (split tube, tyre on, trim excess tube away once seated) but it leaves a good seal around the side of the bead.
When I do my son's 24" bike that will be the treatment it gets.
I used Gorilla tape the proper stuff on one bike and it works fine no issues.
Taped plenty of non UST rims with no death or fireballs...
Ghetto tubeless here for my kids 20" alienation deviant with schwalbe Moe joes.
16" Presta tube out back, Schraeder tube up front.
