[#7488795]

Think about getting a fat bike and am considering a Genesis Caribou.

Don't know much about Genesis or specifically the Caribou... Are they any good? Decent value?

Thanks.

The price has dropped cos a new ones coming out, I'd probably snap one up but I'm put off by the head tube as I don't think you can put a bluto on and while I dont think I'd want to I'd like the option.

I bought one a couple of months back and really like it.
To put some context in here: I wanted it to be a bike I could just go and ride, not as an alternative to my Trail full susser, or for aggressive riding.
I bought it for riding days when fireroads, bridleways and towpath might be more the order of the day, to ride in really crap conditions in winter , or maybe just to go ride to the pub .
As such I haven't and won't 'upgrade' much. To be honest, I've replaced the swept back standard one for something flatter and wider, added an expander cog to the cassette and gutted mudguards .
I've ridden many times in the local woods, Done a tour of the Elan Valley, a nice ride round north Devon including Saunton sands and for several towpath / pub rides.
I m happy with it, although the Vee Tire Mission tyres are a bit 'directional' and despite what I said above , after Christmas I might look and see what s about as an alternative.

Not quite on topic, but I only found out a couple of hours ago that Daphni = Caribou.

I know 🙄

I have one too. bought for very similar reasons to cakeface. it will never replace my proper full suss for general riding but its a lovely looking bike in Orange and i really like the detail. likewise I swapped out the sweep back bars for some Atlas' i had knocking about, hope stem, replaced the brakes with shimano zee's and got rid of the vee tyres in favour of some floaters. also got a x-fusion dropper on there too.

its use it mainly in local woods walking the dog, can really veer off track and plough through the undergrow! but i do take it to my inlaws in North Wales and ride it about on the beaches and dunes. its also perfect for tag-along school run duties. my little girl absolutely loves pitching up at school on it!

plus its always ready for when the snow comes!!

i mentioned in another thread that im thinking about uograding the wheels now, couldnt get these to go up tubeless at all, i also wouldnt mind a few 'accessories' to make use of all the bosses it has!.

I am 5'10 and was thinking of getting the 17.5

Is the 17.5" the same as the Medium ?

Fairly sure freeborn had the 2015 model on their site* for around £700 earlier this week but they don't seem to be there now.

*from past experience this doesn't always mean that they have them in stock though.

Edit: 17.5" only

Thanks all. First ride yesterday.

Lots of questions. First up, what tyre pressure is recommended for general trails? I went out at 12 psi?

oooh you have the orange one like mine, id assumed you'd got the 2016. id defo recommend ditching the vee tyres. i remember when i first got mine and i took it out in the snow, was wheel spinning all over the place, thought to myself this isnt supposed to happen on these bikes, kinda defeating the object - stuck some floaters on and was away!

8-10 psi here i think, just go on feel really. i quite often bang more air in for tag-along duties and let it out again for normal rides so cba keep checking the psi...

OP: experiment around 7-9psi. Much less will roll or maybe slip off the bead; more makes it far too bouncy and un-damped. The tyres on a Caribou are a bit meh, so consider changing at least the front for an On-one Floater to make it a more trail capable bike. Both is best though, especially if you want to play the Fatty's party trick, the ability to climb steep slippy stuff like a goat on acid.

You don't 'need' a Bluto, that's kindof missing the point of a Fatty, so if you never have one, you won't miss it. Wide bars are good though, helps with leverage when you've a lot of front tyre to persuade to change direction. I run an 810 El Guapo and reckon that's about right.
Ride it lots- I bet you love it.

Only really looked at 2015. I prefer the Orange, plus a hefty discount and the single chain ring make it sweeter still.

12 way too hard, I don't run my krampus with that much air in the tyres! I only ran 7 in my On One Fatty as the useless rims let the bead slip below that. I'm running 5-6 in my Moonlander. Looking on the Fat Forum the Vee Missions have a reputation for not being much good at anything unfortunately and generating a lot of self steer.

I'm currently running both tyres at about 9 psi, just seems the best balance between deforming and gripping over roots as well as taking some of the " bounce" away. Like you I started at about 12 psi and the ride was almost harsh.
Changed my front Vee Mission for a Surly Nate at the weekend, which has taken the slightly 'tram line' feel away.
Not ridden in snow yet, but may well change the rear yet, if I have a few quid left after Christmas.
