Pretty standard garage with up and over door. What cheapish alarm?

Thinking wireless PIR system?

We got a very cheap driveway alarm (wireless) of the internet and a couple of mains adapter things from Maplin. It has so far managed to detect a rat on the shelving and as I went in the garage cautiously clutching the obigatory Bommers

+1, seems to work well, although not had any rodent alerts with mine!

Following a break in to my garage last Friday, in which they had a good go at a lock but to no avail, I have added one of those wireless alarms to my security setup.

I got one on ebay for £32 that can be set to chime inside the house when triggered, or can be set on full alarm if wanted. I already have an alarm inside the shed anyway but have always suspected that could be battered into submission pretty easily.

It was one of these

Lock the mother-in-law in there and only feed her twice a week. Seems to have worked so far. 😉

Looks like the ticket Dr Bakes. Amazon also seem to sell the same one.

Is it worth have an alarm that sounds in the garage or is a system like that much more expensive as it would need to be tamper proof?

+1 for wireless with loud bit next to the bed. Wish I had taken my bike security seriously before I had 2 bikes take from the garage a couple of years back. 🙁

I've already got a similarly cheap alarm that sounds in the shed. However it is within reach of all but the shortest criminal and wouldn't take much to break it before it draws much attention.

With the sensor for the other alarm placed in another corner I hope it may go unnoticed long enough for me to get down there with a pair of Bombers. When I'm not in the house I'll put it in 'alarm' mode so the sound may attract some attention from the neighbours.

The more deterrents the better as far as I'm concerned, I just have to remember to use them all!

I got a Yale wireless alarm from ScrewFix a few years back. Comes with motion sensor and door/window sensors. Actually works really well. The only shame is that I can't work out how to add two bells so I can put one in the shed and one on the house (visual deterrent). The alarm is so loud that if there was one in the shed you couldn't stay in there when it is going off. I got caught out when changing the batteries and my ears were ringing for a couple of hours afterwards

The old version of this but with 2 door contacts and one PIR. I am sure we paid about £70

Whilst not cheap you could go for a wireless house intruder alarm system, including PIR / door contacts in the garage... most have autodiallers too so it will call your mobile / nominated numbers if you are away from the house.

The advantage is that it makes a lot of noise and can't be muffled / silenced by an intruder.

A cut and paste from mine after a similar post last month and after ours was "attempted":

We had a geezer try and pry our garage door last year.

Follow up results were a few things we never thought of (neighbour hood watch had a nice chap come round and talk with us).

Result was -

Dont carry bikes outside car.

A PIR outside front and back of garage that turns on a light INSIDE the garage or the house.

A separate PIR that activates outside the gargage front if someone gets really close.

Keyed locks on the bottom of our up and over door (original was only locked with a cable activated latch in the middle of the top of the door).

A battery powered alarm inside the garage (PIR activated).

Remove anthing from the garage that could be used to cut chains / locks.

Decent insurance. Fulfil the minimum requirement of the insurance (eg some policies locking bikes, some locking to anchors, others are different.

Jist of advise was - if they get in - they have all night - day to nosey / hack away / disassemble. Even if they get in and get detered they might come back.

Deter them from picking on you in the first place. There are easier targets.

/Edit - Note I've not got round to the alarm bit yet. That seems like the most faff tbh./

Frankly, the best thing in the world.
Just remember to untie it from the crankarm of your 'five'.
