Looking to get my scott frame resprayed, is it best to leave the bearings in or take them out, as the place spraying it is a car spray shop and I'm not sure if they will spray into them or not. Is there a tool you can use to ream the bearing seats or do they need to be properly masked? Am I better off getting somewhere like Argos Cycles to do it?

Bearings need taking out. It might be possible to do it with the bearings still in, but I wouldn't risk it.

Bearing seats will need properly masking. I've had a full suss powder coated at an industrial surface coating company and they masked the bearing holes perfectly, no issues.

Don't forget the seat tube, bottom bracket shell etc though it is possible to ream/re thread these after the event.

Just a thought, but I thought Auto paint was meant to be quite brittle and not that good for the endless stream of flying rocks and grit etc that an mtb is subject to? Powder coating will get big thumbs up in these parts!

If it helps I have my frame resprayed by Argos a good few years ago. They were excellent and I'm very happy. I had my Turner 5Spot resprayed, but only the front triangle so had to remove the bushings (Turners don't have bearings) and they kept this area clean, including the bottom bracket. However putting the rear shock back was tricky and had to remove some paint.

A friend had his Santa Cruz resprayed and they removed the bearings, resprayed and reassembled, so it might be an idea to contact them to discuss.

Do you really want to have you beloved bike resprayed by a car spray shop. No offence to them but they are probably not used to respraying bikes whereas Argos are.

Hope that helps.

Indeed do a search on "powder coat".

A lot of powder coaters have done bike frames before and will do an excellent job probably at a fraction of the cost of Argos.
