[#10123719]

ordered a 100% aircraft in medium and large.

The large feels comfortable but slightly roomy and the medium feels tight. I’m thinking keep the medium because the pads will give a bit and feel more comfortable but the large will get loose

my head measures as 58.5cm which is the upper end of medium (57/58cm) on the size guide

Should I go for a tight fit over comfort?

cheers.

James

Part of this is head shape...

Depending on helmet manufacturer I find myself between M and L.... the part that determines for me is cheek guards... I find that some makes in Med push in my cheeks so I can end up biting them... even though the rest of the helmet is good...

Sounds like 100% Aricraft isn't the helmet for you. If the medium is tight then the pads will already be compressed, there's nowhere for any more give to go

If its not a perfect fit, give up on it. I know from bitter (motorbike helmets are non returnable at any reputable dealer) experience of having a weird shaped (and XXL) head that an 'almost' right helmet becomes uncomfortable after about 30min, then either the localised pressure on your forrhead builds to unbearable levels or ifnits just a bit too 'snug' will eventually give you the most incredible headaches and gets pushed up and off by the wind if its not snug.

That sounds like the larger one might be OK though, I find that if a helmet fits (bear in mind my xxl odd shaped bonce) then the smaller sizes tend to also fit but just tighter, whereas the wrong shape just won't fit at all.

It even varies within brands, one 661 helmet style fits me, the other i can't even get the chin over my head.

I tried a few FF helmets, one of which was a carbon Giro Remedy that my LBS were willing to do a great deal on. I nearly convinced myself that it fit, but reading the fitting advice that came with the helmet I realised that it was too big. I think you were supposed to leave the straps undone and try rocking your head sideways and back and forth - if the helmet moved it was too loose (although don't take that as gospel but it was something along those lines). Took it back and tried a few more on until I tried a fox rampage and it fitted like a (helmet) glove.

My rule of thumb: with the straps undone, the helmet shouldn't move at all when you've put it on. I would say "comfortable but roomy" sounds too big to me. How roomy is it?

Cheers for all the replys

nickc - not that roomy actually. Just tried again and no slippage when moving head with the helmet on but not fastened. It moves with my skin and I think with the MIPS but remains in place

tried the medium again for a few minutes and think it would start to give me a headache at the temples if I wore it for more than 15 mins so I reckon that one is definitely out

I've used a triple folded buff in the lining of oldest_oab's fullface to really snug up the fit - worked really well.
