I'm in the process of building up a new to me frame which came with a Dpx2 rear shock and I've been surprised by the pressure needed to get to any level of support compared to my previous Cane Creek DB air. Googling suggests high pressures are needed but I'm uneasy going above 250 psi and my shock pump is not happy. Is there a high pressure sweet spot with these shocks or could this be indicative of a shock that needs a service? I'm about 13 stone and it's an Orange Five frame (I know but I like them!).
Always found DPX2s feel quite soft and seems to sit low in their travel. They're a lovely shock, but very different to a Rockshox
For what it's worth I have 155psi in my dpx2, obviously it depends on weight and leverage ratio. I'm about 70kg and ebike has an average ratio of 2.3 :1
Shock goes well, I did have an issue with it topping out when the negative didn't equalise properly, it didn't get as far as getting stuck down but did feel harsh and had a bit of a top out clunk. All good after a TF service though.
VERY high pressures needed on a DPX2 compared to most, from memory...
Only thing I can suggest to improve it, especially on a linear bike like an Orange 5, is to fit a larger volume spacer.
Wasn't really impressed with DPX2's to be honest. The Float X that replaced it is a much better shock!
mines a few years old (2019) but i run very high pressure 280, the lsc i also have to run v high- 1 from max, im 95kg, but it works really well, much more supportive and controlled than the rockshox it replaced
Thanks all. Time to buy a more robust shock pump.
I have one on a Tallboy from 2020. I am 92kg plus pack and water and run 2240-260 depending on how much I carry. The rochshox pump is a good one for getting the higher PSI!
Or even 240
The DPX2 needs a notoriously high pressure. An Orange five has a very, very narrow sweet spot to get it working right - as a combo, thats not ideal.
Echoing the above - the newer Fox Float X is markedly, markedly better and speccing my Stage Evo with one was the best decision - it felt so, so much better than previous setups.
A big difference is they have a big soft bottom out bumper from the DHX shock and much more controlled towards the very end of the travel. Not just a rock hard 'stop' which combined with a linear/falling rate single pivot is far from great.
See if you can snag another DB Air cheap?
They work really well with Oranges and feel a bit better than the Float X, IMO.
Not had the DPX2 on any of mine though.
