I'm looking to service my forks and seen that Fox recommend using their damper removal tool to prevent damaging the bottom of the damper shaft when striking with rubber mallet. Anyone found them cheap or come up with a solution?
You talking about getting the lower legs off? I think most people just loosen the nuts and hit the shaft with a soft faced mallet. The proper tools are a ridiculous price. I've seen some cheaper on eBay, more like £20 a piece (and you may need different tools for each leg) or from the states but the postage cost makes those a non starter.
Is this just to remove the lowers? If so, just back the nut off a few turns, stick a socket on it, and give it a few taps with a rubber mallet. Works for me.

Drill and tap a bit of bar to make your own tool
Undo the nut a couple of turns and hit a deep socket with a hammer
I have done all of the above over the years, hitting with a socket will mark the nuts (if you care).

Happen to know what thread they are?

M8x1.0 and M10x1.0 off the top of my head, but I would check. (made it years ago and just use the Fox tool now)
You could also use a coupler nut if you can find one with the right thread or weld a nut on an old socket/bit of tube etc.
Some people have just used a tube that goes over the rebound adjuster and rests on the end of the shaft, easy to slip and snap the adjuster or mangle the threads/end of the shaft so I would be cautious about doing that.
Thanks, I like the idea of knocking something up (well, I also like the idea of the Fox tools just not the RRP)
Just changed the travel on my 34s - same tool needed as 36s. I did as above, but got a paranoid about damaging the threads, so I completely removed the nuts and put a small socket turned upside down over the rebound control and the other nut to bash the bolts free.
Just ordered one of these
