[#7111969]

Just bought a used Specialized stumpjumper expert carbon evo 29er 2014 and found a crack in the down tube by the bottle cage mounts it has not been riden since being bought and it was bought out side off eBay but payed though PayPal What can be done about the frame? Will Specialized offer a front triangle frame replacement? Offer a reduced price front triangle? Could it be repaired if so will it look the same as it uses a raw carbon look with a few strips of painted gray in places and would the repair hold up?

Don't repair it.
Speak to your dealer.
Specialized are very good on warranty issues.I'm sure they'll offer you something.

I doubt you've got any warranty if it's used. Was ex demo or just 2nd hand?

If it's carbon it's almost definitely repairable, whether it will look the same will depend on a lot of things but you'll likely be able to tell there's a repair up close. If you want me to judge whether I think it's possible, send some photos of it and I'll have a look.

There are a few specialists who do carbon repairs. Funnily enough I do remember one shows a Spesh frame as an example of their workmanship.

These are the fellas.

Give them a call. Give Spesh a call. Give Paypal a call.

See who has the best plan and take it from there.

What does the seller say?

I'd be asking the seller to contact spesh. Any bikes I've sold that have warranty on them, I'd do that for someone no issues.

Did you see the bike before buying?

I'd contact the seller in the first instance, see what they say.
Legally unfortunately you have little recourse with them, though you may well find that Paypal buyer protection covers you (assuming you paid as goods and not as a gift?). But in the first instance, speak to the seller.

In this order:

- Try the seller
- Try Paypal
- If neither of these work (and it's not guaranteed they will), speak to Specialized nicely and see what they can do to help, bearing in mind they are under no obligation to do so. Be nice, friendly and matey and you might well get a result of some sort.

As others have said, first port of call is back to seller...unless it was described as cracked, its not as described and a crack is definitely something id want to know about!

Was it originally offered on EBay, then the auction pulled and you bought via PayPal?

You'll need to take a good read of the T&C's as they aren't keen on supporting these sorts of sales. Hope it wasn't 'gift'.

I'd try the seller first, I'd be mortified if I sold something and missed something like this. They might have a claim on the shipping insurance too (if it was posted).

Likewise. Innocent until proven guilty, might be a genuine oversight. I recently sold some brakes on here, I didn't check them properly before putting them up for sale and he pointed out a problem when they arrived, I was very embarrassed!

What he said, but add...

- Get it repaired but don't expect it to look as new, then ride and enjoy it while chalking it down to experience.

They are in my experience. Don't expect a replacement frame for free, but a contribution under CRW should see you right. But as others have said already, contact the seller and follow up with a repair specialist first (even if only to get a quote).

Spesh wouldn't help me on my Enduro when a chainstay crack was found. Ok it was 11 years old and Im the original owner. Not even an offer of a reduced price replacement.
Was pretty disappointed by that after they were so good replacing the original frame after I'd had it 18 months.

I'd echo the recommendation to contact everyone; seller/paypal/ebay/specialized anyone involved who might give you a route forwards, and I'd also take the initiative and send a few pictures of the damage to a couple of specialists to get a quote or two, you can then at least put a price/value against repairing the damage if/when anyone comes back to you with any offers of help, compensation, etc... The damage sounds far from irreparable...

So take your pick:

We had two carbon frames replaced by Specialized last year under their crash assist policy A S Works Enduro and S Works Stumpjumper. Both were crashed in the Alps and well beyond any repair that I would want to throw a leg over and bounce down a hill side. Specialized UK were first class in sorting it from the initial contact whilst in the Alps to getting the bikes back. Things to be aware of. We needed to transact it through an authorized dealer, although we had lots of discussions direct. They will want a copy of the original purchase receipt and the original frame back. Even using their crash assist scheme carbon Specialized frames aren't cheap.

Possibly, but if that replacement failed in a shorter term than it did should I have asked or just accepted I'd had a previous replacement.

Lifetime warranty, why wouldn't you at least ask?

Im not pissy about it as such, but it just seemed a bit final, "no tough shit" type of thing.

This is page 7, look for the "S-works custom respray" halfway down. That is my mate Andy's S-works Stumpjumper. The chainstay pivot pulled out of the chainstays themselves. had it all repaired over a year ago now and had an AWESOME paint job done as well. Still going strong (and hes a big northern bloke who's not sutle on a bike!) and really well priced.

They are based in Dorking, Surrey and are really great guys.

I've heard similar stories of that age of enduro. Seems like they continued replacing chainstays for quite a long time but eventually ran out or stays.

Yes, my understanding is they ran out chainstays by 2010!
However I have found a source for a set. God bless STW!

Spoke to specialised they're not intrested and the guy it was bought from won't get back to me, I've put a mark ever side the suspected crack and see if it spreads as my lbs thinks there's a chance it's just the laqar/over coat if it spreads I've found a company that will repair it and re spray the hole frame and it will look factory again so if it spreads more I'll get it repaired and fully resprayed
