[#1907789]

Another question about our forthcoming tour. I have ridden in the Netherlands before and got sworn at a fair bit by locals who mistook me for a useless local rather than a confused tourist as I wobbled around.

We won't look quite so much like locals this time as will be on a fully panniered tandem - but we probably ( as I often do) get mistaken for Germans instead!

Should we fly a flag from the back of the tandem to advertise our status as tourists but not Germans? If so should it be a union flag, a saltire or a Lion rampant? Or a pirate flag?

Surely it should be a Scottish flag? If anything it will confuse them.

They'd mistake the lion for a Flanders flag

Ziggy - a Saltire and a Lion Rampant are both scottish flags.

I think the Saltire would be recognised.

Uplink - I didn't know that.

get the saltire flying behind TJ!,
my ex being Dutch when there everyone loved the fact i was Scottish, the anglais still have a reputation in places cause of that footy fan trouble, even though that was a wee while ago now.
Also it was mostly Scots regiments who were involved in the failed WW2 operation Market Garden. the country hasnt forgot the price paid there to try and free them from ze Germans, my grandad is buried near Daventer, some good war museums to visit around Arnhem,

I would prefer it if you flew St Georges Cross, but I'm struggling to find ways to motivate you to do this..

a plastic scottish flag would be the most apt in this situation i believe.

Toys - I'd fly a union flag but not a St Georges Cross. Toomuch association with England football fans who are not really liked in the Netherlands

LOL @ trailmonkey.

I think you should either select a sticker, or maybe a GB badge.

Flags are not proper flags unless they are massive, heavy, and possibly battle-scarred.

Small plastic flags are just pathetic.

Slight hijack - whats going on with these flags that appear with some corporate logo emblazoned across the middle? Tabloid mastheads for example. Tat.

What about one of those euro flags with all the little stars on it, after all we're all one big happy family now.

One flag per country visited as seen on a Korean ladies touring bike, v cute! Though not much use if you are only going to Holland obviously...

But you'd happily fly a Saltire? In Holland?
