Can it be done?
I've got one of these forks:

I don't need to fit a front rack, but I do need a mudguard...

Yes, works fine, you wan to bend the stays so they are radial at the sliding mg mounts.
On those forks those are meant for mgs IIRC, not racks (I owned a pair)
