Pretty much as the title says, i've got a cyclocross bike with sram rival 22 throughout. The easy gear is just too hard for the peaks and mud, 36t inner chainring isn't small enough, but wonder if I could fit a cog expander to the back?? not sure if it would fit, what size I could go to and is there anything else id have to do. Cheers!

What's the ratios on the current cassette?
You'd need to calculate mech length needed etc.
Try harder?

Im trying my hardest, trouble is I just can't turn the pedals without wheel spinning on a lot of the steep/muddy climbs. hate having to get off and walk when I know I can clear the same sections on my mtb. Ratio of cassette I think (not got it here to look at) is 11-32.

Shoulder it and run, I've never heard of that brand of expander cog before, where can I buy them??

I've had the same problem. Found a PG1170 11-36 Cassette and have just fitted it. Seems to be fine as a replacement, no need to fiddle with B screws or indexing.

I don't have any experience of cog expanders, but the rear mech looks like it could handle a 40 tooth cog without the top jockey wheel touching the cassette.

Cheers for a helpful reply, its only when you actually use the bike up step muddy climbs do you realise the limitations. I can see why many people have a mtg chainset on instead to gain easier gearing. I'll look out for the 36t cassette, that combined with a 34t chainring could be my answer!

I've had a look at the PG1170 11-36 Cassette, and on the website it states that its only compatible with the Force CX1 Medium Cage Rear Derailleur featuring X-HORIZON. Also they are pretty pricey and my cassette isn't worn at all yet (only had it a month or so) so whilst that could be an answer, I'm still interested if anyone has put an expander cog thingy onto a normal rival 22 cassette. Anyone?? 😯

Can you replace the 32t cog with a 36t cog from a cheap cassette?

That's what I was getting at, 11-36 cassette and long cage mech (MTB). Don't know which are compatible, but the expander are to add extra teeth to MTB cassettes, so doubt you'd need it/get it set up.

I've got the Sram Rival version of the Pickenflick, so the medium cage Rival mech works with the 11-36 cassette. The cassette came from the German Bike Components site and was about £66 including postage.
