Going to give some spd type pedals and shoes a try for the first time. They will be used on both the road and off-road bike hopefully. What sould I be looking at? I know there are different types such as shimano spd's, egg beater, look etc but no idea whats best for me. Not looking to spend a fortune to start with just incase I don't take to them.

Pedals - a pair of Shimano M520's can be had for £20, are very good for the money and will give you a good idea of whether you like to be clipped in or not. No brainer for your first pair.

Shoes - Go to a good LBS and try a few pairs on to see what shape you like. I've always liked the Specialized BG shoes, the Sport model is nice a good shoes for the money and quite cheap as well.

Buy shoes that fit well, and don't get the cheapest models - soles lack stiffness.
