I've just joined the club....

Well, it's taken a wee while. First of all, I was caught in the Transatlantic postal system then, when I eventually opened up the boxes, I just had to get on with the build. The only real issue I've had is that the Mr Whirly cranks won't play nicely with the Philcentric EBB. In short, the spider needed to fit the 32T is too small in diameter for the EBB to sit in.

I ordered a Raceface 100mm set and, after a bit of head-scratching, managed to figure out what combination of spindle spacers would allow the necessary clearance (1 x NDS, 3 x DS). So far, I've had one short ride up and down the street to see how it feels.

[LI]Fit was perfect (always a worry buying with no test ride).
[LI]The Jones bars feel lovely, but I might play around with stem length a bit.
[LI]Not too happy with the Alfine cable routing. It'll do in the meantime, but I might look at different non-turn washers to let me route it down the seat stay. The Alfine fitting instructions also seemed to contain an error; leaving the specified amount of bare cable at the hub end meant that the alignment marks were at least one gear out in 6th, Seems to be fine now that I've used my own measurements.
[LI]The Alfine certainly feels nice. There's a slight clunk when changing down, but no perceptible noise changing up. It had me guessing a couple of times.
[LI]I'm still not convinced with the EBB. Will a couple of dabs of threadlock really hold it?[/LI]

Now to look at mudguard and rack options......

Druidh - what made you choose a steering wheel rather than conventional handlebars?

GW - Ordinary bars aren't niche enough 🙂

TBH, I fancied trying something with a bit of sweep and it was a toss-up between these and a set of Carnegies. I'l likely want to go off "bike-packing" with this thing so I thought an extra bar at the front would be handy for suspending a sleeping bag etc. from.

Edit: and I've cocked up the forum formatting my not closing my List tags.....

Going back to that picture of the fat cargo bike.... Just want you all to know that I will be liasing with surly over single malt in January and will continue my campaign for a 29er fat bike, and 29er fat cargo bike...

... If fat is good, that fatter is fatest and therefore better.

Doubling back to the stock issue. Ison are being brave, doing a good job, going where most importers would not venture.
It's the same as a retailer, holding the full range of tyres, frames etc is a Gamble... We win on some lines and lose on others... Still have all surly tyres in stock, but have what must be a three year supply of endomorphs.

Everything is available here, it just takes a few months longer to get here. They have to ship in containers/boats rather than planes to keep the costs realistic. A lot of the critisism relates to delays rather than it not being available. We are all big kid who want their fat toys ASAP... Myself included.

Anyway... Is it snowing yet?

bruneep - it's impolite to ask, and there's a bit of a tale I'd rather not relate in a public forum 🙂 The forks are the one bit I really swithered over. They are so much more expensive than the regular aluminium forks and yet not massively lighter.

The biggest fright was duty/VAT.

BTW - I think all medium and large frames are now out-of-stock until March?

Druidh, where did you get the bottlecage bolt cable holders from?

I have cable clips like that on my Ragley Blupig. Bags of clips can be sourced from hotlines IIRC.

RD - as above, they are from the Ragley frames. If you want a couple, let me know. I bought a bag of 8 and now might not need any. I've switched the Alfine non-turn washers around so the cable ARM is now roughly parallel to the seat stay. As a result, I can use the top-tube cable mounting points.

That is what I need right there.

I am trying to sort out a fat cargo bike build right now, but best I can get so far is a V4 Mundo frameset, where fatties might work on trials rims, but I'm not sure about the potential chainline issues.

If Surly could come up with a fat option for the dummy, or a custom build solution, they could have my money right now 😉

Just had my first ride out on the 907. Despite my skepticism, the EBB seems to work 🙂

Interesting to see the difference in tyre marks when going through mud though. The large contact area certainly seems to make less impact and, if anything, covers up damage caused by other trail users.

Definitely needs mudguards though.

You have a lot of trails to roll flat on the Pentlands now, 🙂
standard crud catchers work ok on fattys, its the centre that throws the spray, they look better without them but it ain`t pratical 🙂

Just off out for a xmas eve beach ride down to North Berwick,
will check out the Town lights, try get into the spirit - Hip flask is filled 😀 no sunset as overcast, looks like to be a wet nightride home in a sideways typhoon!
