I know there's a pretty active Ride Thr Wainwright's thread going right now, but I'm after some specific Fairfield suggestions. We're in Hawkshead this week and conditions are good for riding something high.
Firstly, is riding the whole horseshoe just a tick list exercise, or is it worth it vs nipping up to the summit and back down?
I've walked up via Nab Scar and remember that being steep, even without a bike. It looks like riding up on the east side of The Tongue is easier, but that means riding up to Rydal, so some road work.
I think we'll ride down to Allcocks Tarn, assuming either an up and back or an anti clockwise horseshoe route. What are the options down from the tarn, there's quite a few paths on the open bike maps?
Thanks!
Sooooo....my preference is anti clockwise via Low Sweden Bridge if you want to do the full loop. Lots of hike a bike. Or you could just carry up from Rydal as an out and back so you can scope the descent in full. I have ridden down via the tarn to join the coffin road and it was nice but I do much prefer the steep drop into Rydal.
I have ridden the horseshoe a couple of times in the winter and really enjoyed it and also done it as an accent via the tarn and also up from Rydal.Â
The summit is worth the effort to reach. Great views in every direction. You could piss away height on the loose track down to Seat Sandal then take the footpath down towards Grasmere as an alternative. I enjoyed that footpath last summer.
Descending via Stone Arthur might work but I have only ridden down to the summit of Stone Arthur in the snow and not dropped all the way down to the valley floor.
I would not bother doing it clockwise as the western ridge is a real gem.Â

So why not search that thread
Or indeed the other threads.
No trying to be difficult but all I'll end up doing is typing the same thing here via this god awful UI that I did on the previous occasions.

Please note that it really needs to be insanely dry to make the eastern prong good

Here's the other. Enjoy.Â

Basically everything Sanny says is wisdom
So why not search
That thread
Zzzz Zzzz.
If I'm boring you, why bother to reply? Shouldn't you be watching Last of the Summer Wine or something? No doubt you'll reply again. Thanks for reminding me what a special place STW is.
Last of the summer wine? Just how old are you? 🤣 I wouldn't be hard on the generalist. It can be a pain to type up stuff on the forum when linking to what you have written before can be so much easier and has much more detail that will be of use to you.Â
Never been accused of having wisdom before but I will happily take the compliment! 😉
Anyhoos, Fairfield is good and well worth doing!Â

I don’t especially like the climb up past low Sweden bridge, I prefer to climb from grasmere via Alcock tarn south, then a quick carry onto the summit ridge and start pedalling. On a good day when I’ve got the legs, the majority of that western ridge is all rideable which is nice and satisfying. You then have multiple options of the scree to grisedale tarn and down tongue gill to the west, or turning round and hooning it down the way you came up. Turn off and head back down towards Alcock tarn, then take the mellower but faster line to the south, or the lumpier techier path to the north of the tarn. Lovely mountain, I need to revisit it soon
