[#8193267]

So im going to give 1x10 a bash. Picked the wrong week to remove my front mech (another story) but basically ill be going 32NW and at the moment i have a 36 on the rear. Ive got a medium cage xt mech and i would like to keep shifting the same.

So 40t or 42T I dont want to get a rad cage or anything as that would mean additional cost that could go towards a mech. Any issues going with the bigger cog? im thinking mech capability.

Looking to the future is the mech different for the standard 42t shimano 11 speed vs the 46t ones?

I've gone back from 11s XT to 10s XT + 40T expander. Kept 11s shifter and mech and all's working fine and no dropped chain back-pedalling on 1st gear anymore (for the winter mud that's a god send on flats). 425mm chain stay has trouble with 11s XT cassette.

11s GS XT 11s mech no different for 42T or 46T. It also does 10s just fine too.

You'll be fine up to 40T definitely with your existing kit and the 2T extra really makes sod all difference.

Also consider if your chain line will take an 11s cassette as the 42T is inset towards the spokes one more sprocket so if 10s works great then stick to that would be my advice after trying it all out. I've messed about with chain line loads to fix the XT 42T issue. Works a treat back on 10s though.

The standard mech will work on 42t but it's a bit marginal- I found it a pain in the arse to set up, and pretty temperamental. In the end I found the radcage worth it- it turned it from a highly strung setup to performance just like standard. Not sure if 40T is the same, never had one of those.

That exactly mirrors my experience, radcage was worth every penny. Worth a try without, but if/when your gears are no longer making sense the radcage will make life a lot easier

Heard good things about them but can't see it being worthwhile with things like 11speed or sunrace cassettes

+3 for Radr cage...

I've also only recently found the joys of owning a hanger alignment tool, which has taken a lot of faff out of rear shifting set up.

It's not an 11-spd thing, but is very relevant if shoving either a big cog or a Sunrace cassette onto a 10-spd setup

yea fair enough, but its half the cost of an 11 speed derailleur. so its makes the sense to jump to that.

Different ratio on an 11 speed isn't it? Admittedly this caught me by surprise...

...

but I believe you'd need the 11-spd shifter to make it work

Yup, the cost of an expander + a radcage is a decent way towards a full upgrade. OTOH shimano 10 speed shifting is better imo.

Personally I'd not bother with an expander. Just get a Sunrace cassette. they're lovely.
I run a 10sp 11-42 on my hardtail and an 11sp 11-46 on the fatty.
