[#1712517]

I have just sold a bike on Ebay and received very prompt payment via PayPal. Initially I did not notice that this was with an 'e cheque'. Follow up email from PayPal advises that I should not send the sale item until the e cheque has cleared (at this point e cheques were a new concept to me). Seemed sensible enough and so I contacted the buyer who is under the impression that this system is further buyer protection. They can release the funds once the item has arrived and is as described.
I have subsequently heard this from other sources but is this not the buyer protection that Ebay and PayPal were supposed to provide?
I just wondered whether there was any agreement as to the correct approach?

I thought E-cheques were something you got from new Paypal users?

Wait until it's cleared before sending anything.

E-cheques, IIRC i paid this way once, usually it takes longer for the funds to clear (like a normal cheque would have), as you're effectivly transferring funds to your paypal account. So i'd hang fire in sending ANYTHING until the funds have cleared and available to spend in your account.
I'd also notify the buyer of this so he know whats going on too.

Just send the buyer a link to the PayPal help page on echeques which state it can take 7 to 9 working days for the funds to get to you. I wouldn't post anything to him until it had cleared.

yeah I once managed to send a e-cheque, (I have sympathy with the buyer as..) I had no idea I was sending one.
Once I realised what was happening, I was going to have to wait a week for for brake pads I needed now, I cancelled it and re-ordered using a different payment method.

Do not send anything until it has been confirmed as cleared.

Agree with the above. If the buyer is genuine and you communicate effectively with him, then he shouldn't have a problem. He arguing that e-cheque gives him better protection, you can use the same argument back at him. Send him the paypal e-mail stating that you wait until it clears. If he isn't happy with that, then he'll have to lump it.

ditto, e-cheque is what paypal issues if they havent been able to verify his account details (otherwise they just do it like shops do with your card details and check your account for funds, authorise the transaction and wait for your bank to pay them back). The e-cheque is like a normal cheque, you have to wait for it to clear as theres no gaurentee that it wont bounce.

E-Cheques take ages to clear generally about 2 weeks, with the payment notification PayPal also advise not to send until payment is cleared.
