Will shimano rings fit my truativ firex chain set? Or do I just bite the bullet and buy a shimano crank as it's all shimano including the BB.

Providing the cranks are the standard 4-bolt pattern, with 104mm bolt circle diameter (measured from the very centre of the crank spindle/bottom bracket) and the rings are 4-bolt 104mm bcd then yes, no problem.
You don't need the same manufacturer....
Well, not all the time anyway.. 🙂
