I bought a 2nd hand DH bike yesterday, never had one before. I want to get a new shifter, rear mech, chain and cassette as the gears are goosed. I don't know whats good for DH, want to do it cheap if I can, don't fancy spending a fortune e.g. Saint. Anyone recommend me anything? I know people use road bike parts. I want a compact rear mech, I don't know much else. Can anyone offer any advice please?

People use Road mechs with a Road cassette (typically 27 or 28 max sprocket).
You match the mech cage to the range of cassette and chainrings.

KMC make good, tough chains with a re-usable link.

Chain retention is a big issue, and unless you go 10-sp with a clutch mech (only MTB and not Road so far) you need to get advice on this.

I ran an eight speed setup on my DH bike (while ago now). SRAM shifters (either X5/X7 and an X9 supershort mech or SRAM Attack and a Shimano road mech).

If its purely DH you might want to run a road cassette too, for closer ratios.

The new Zee kit looks nice but its stil a few £££.

You'll pick up bits on the classifieds no doubt.
