Got bite by a dog today. Third time this year. The bit the winds me up is after the bite a told the owner the dog had bitten me she said "no it hasn't "and continued to allow the attack to continue. I am then left fending off multiple dogs . The owner only got the control of her animals when my fending off was moving toward me having to seriously hit kick her dogs. She then explained it was my fault as I shouldn't be riding there. Common land with unrestricted horse access. Ended up just riding off. Got to love them

With your user name you should have expected this to happen, once you fended off one dog 5 more would come after you

Report her, she needs to know that's not acceptable.

Agree with this. She and the dogs need to be reported.

Legally required to keep her dogs under control at all times.

She may technically be correct on access.....unless you were riding a really short horse.

But point 1 applies whether you are there legally or trespassing.

I've heard this more than once from dog walkers when I ask them to get their dogs under control, last time on a moors with ground nesting birds during nesting season and plenty of signs to keep dogs on leads...

Report her, council's have to have a dog warden they apparently deal with this type of stuff all the time.

She's probably got form for it and will be well known

If there are signs of a bite then police

The common land issue is a civil matter for the landowner, they can and do give permission sometimes

Op. Have you reported this to the police yet?
When are you going to?

Please write down exactly what happened now, including as good a description as you can of her and the dogs. Make sure you try to get the distinguishing features of the one that actually bit you.

My kid got bitten by dogs in Torridon. I made a moany post on here and filed it 'under shit happens'

Loads of people got on my case and told me to report it to the cops. Which I did. They took it very seriously and prosecuted.

afterwards I was annoyed with ourselves that I didn't take pictures of the dogs concerned as the fuzz wanted solid evidence /ID.

Please, to anyone else this happens to, try to get pictures, write down exact detail and report it.

This isn't a dog warden thing, it's a proper Police arrestable offence thing. Genuinely, next time it could be a child's face.

Like irresponsible motorists and cyclists, irresponsible dog owners need to obey the law or get punished.

(I accept the Police/legal system are a bit stretched and have to prioritise).

Ok it's an extreme example of what can happen, but it does illustrate what can happen and why the op should report this to the police

Bitey dogs don’t get rehomed. If they’re lucky the go to Dog’s Trust unlucky ones get a last visit to the vet.

Deffo report. Many dog owners are a menace and its not just the ones that have dogs that bite. Any out of control dog needs removing from public access land.

I'll never forget the feeling of complete and utter sickness and dread when I came out of our sailing club after briefly grabbing a race timetable to find three alsation dogs with thier heads in my daughters pushchair.......the ***** of an owner had the cheek to say "whats the problem? they are just being friendly" and "look she likes them"

No she didn't like them, she was just too petrified to scream, she sure did afterwards though and has remained scared of dogs ever since.

At the time i was so relieved she was ok I barely acknowledged the owner but ever since its given me the odd nightmare sweats and even though it was around 14 years ago i haven't forgotten it - but i bet the *owner forgot it 10 minutes afterwards.

If i'd reported it he might not have and crucialy if he'd been banned from the club and had a visit from the authorities he might have kept his dogs under control in the future but I doubt it - once a ** always a ****

I'm a dog owner. To the OP - definitely report it.

To all the usual dog haters with their exciting anecdotes - how do you feel about 'all cyclists are red light jumpers?' because one dick jumps a red light?

The dog that will bite a cyclist/person/small child will often go for for other dogs too so I'll let you into a secret - other dog owners think they are ****ers too!

You're absolutely right and If you are one of the select breed of dog owners who keeps a well trained healthy dog on a lead (when apropriate), doesn't let it bark or pine on the other side of a partywall/in the garden, always picks up after it and appreciates that not everyone is a besotted with your pet as you are then crack on. Dogs are fantastic creatures and I'd have one like a shot if I lived a lifestyle that could cope with one.

I've not seen "all", try being less defensive.

Aye - maybe you're right as always Al.

Hopefully I count as one of the 'select' breed of dog owners referred to in Winston's post...

I get 'they just don't like bikes' quite often locally.

I'm not entirely sure if this is an acknowledgement of their lack of control or an excuse for it.

Either way, I give them shit so they might consider more proactive measures next time.

I've not been bitten yet, partly I think, because as a dog owner I know how to interact with dogs, but I suspect its only a question of time.

When it happens, pictures will be taken and the police called. Dogs that do this stuff dont do it only once.

So my non incident incident today. Cycled past a dog with the owner a few yards in front, dog loses it starts growling, barking and getting closer to me so naturally I shout at the dog. The owners response if you shout at him he will bark, my response well if your dog didnt bark and growl at me I wouldnt need to shout. Apparently I was in the wrong... REALLY! Dog owners seem to think of their dog like children they can do no wrong. If your dog loose its mind at the sight of a bike keep it on a lead. simple!

^ I mean, they're right in so much as shouting at the dog probably isn't going to help the situation but it shouldn't have got to that point in the first place.

Very much this.
