2x started with 10 speeds, so a dedicated 2x9 one does not exist. Use a 10 speed one.

Let me go and have a word with my 2x9 setups... been on 2x9 since about 2009. Was 1x9 before that.
There were no dedicated 2x mechs but with a bash you could stop overshift and dial the limits in. Many of the changes were just 3x 10sp shifters with a spacer to top you shifting up once too many times.

So just use some 10sp kit.

I meant 2x9 as the whole groupset, not something cobbled together by someone in their shed.

But you're right, I was wrong. SLX M665 was 2x9 and its FD had a top direct mount option:

My point mostly being there is no difference between the 2x and 3x stuff apart from some spacers normally. 9 & 10 are also interchangeable and as for cobbled together in a shed it's not far off the fix Shimano came up with of putting a block of plastic in the shifter 😉

I use the 10spd direct mount as 2x9 with no issues. Recently could not find new 2x9 M665 let alone a direct mount version.

I've been running a 3x 9-speed mech as a 2x on my fatbike for over four years. As mws says, just dial in the limits to stop over-shifting onto the non-existent big ring.

Quote me if i'm wrong here but i have double 9 speed normal type slx front mechs on two bikes.
The plates are different on the doubles to allow you to use a 36t ring and a lot shorter.
If you use a 36t on a standard tripple 9 speed front mech the chain WILL rub on the outer plate as it's designed for a 32.
There a different shape hence my question... 😀
It started when they brought out the slx double (22/36)crank set and FD to suit.
otsdr..That's what in after bud... 😀 😀

Correct, double front mechs have completely different cage to triples.
Triples won't work on some double set ups.
Others you'll lose the chain on a regular basis.

OK then

I understand what you're saying, but triples are / were designed to accommodate up to at least 46t. Not in the middle position, I'll grant you, but that's just an issue about lateral movement of the cage which is adjustable.

Anyway, the OP is on about using a 2x front mech on a 9 speed setup, NOT using a 3x front mech on a 10 spd setup. So what you're saying doesn't really apply.

IME an (early, Dynasys) 10 speed front derailleur will work just fine on 9 speed. Indeed, I did this with a first gen 10 spd XT front mech on a 2x9 speed setup (with a normal 'triple' double + bash setup. I suppose it's possible that Shimano have updated the design so it only moves enough for 2 sprockets, although I haven't heard anything to this effect and it wouldn't affect you if you're on 2x, anyroad.

Yeah as others have pointed out Shimano did make 2 X 9 FDs in SLX variety to go with their double and bash guard SLX freeride crankset.

Superficial. It still won't work with a 36 in the middle position. The bump in the middle of the outer cage gets in the way.
I might just have to use a BB mounted one as i does seem a high direct mount wasn't invented for 9 speed double set up.
BB mounted and normal band mount do exist.Typical.... 😥
devash .Yer i have two of those wee ones and they do the job nicely.

I have used a 36t sprocket in the middle position with a 2x9 setup. Admittedly not a direct mount one, though. There is some vertical adjustment in direct mount FDs, perhaps just not enough for your frame / FD combination?

Looking at pictures online, SRAM ones seem to have more vertical adjustment than Shimano (the 'slit' is longer).
