[Closed] disc pads fork oil interface - recoverable?

[#1665106]

Had a blown seal and plenty of fork oil got onto the front pads.
I've taken them out, scrubbed/soaked them in white spirit and left them in the sun to dry for a week or so.
BUT they still don't bite. They have had a few long descents on them too, so any remainder should have burnt off.

Any other way of recovering them or are they for the bin?

Annoying thing is that they are only a couple of hours old.

White spirit was probably bad news too... It's oil-based isn't it? Try sandpapering and then burning under a hot grill. They'll probably still need to go in the bin.

And don't forget to clean your rotors too!

bin 'em. Do you really want to try and rely on them?

Indeed, Isopropyl is the thing to use.
I've personally never managed to fully recover a set of pads after this has happened, I'd just replace them with a new pair after cleaning the rotor.

after a week of soaking in there's no way to get that white spirit out.
if you are really desperate, you could try using a blowtorch to burn the oil out, but it never really works that well.

bin em +1

white spirit was the best solvent i could find at home, and it's pretty volatile so will have all evaporated.
Rotors have also been done.

I guess I'll try sandpaper and if that doesn't work then it's the bin.

Bassspine - a misunderstanding here - soaking was for a couple of minutes. The week was drying out in the sunny corner of the garage where it get's pretty warm.

looks like they're for the bin.

White spirit is useless for decontaminating your pads, bin them.

White spirit leaves an oily film after the majority volatilises. Not good for pads or discs, or indeed, braking performance.

I've had fair results by burning oil off using meths in a pan (light it), but they can go a little crumbly, the organics are more prone to this than sintered. To get around this I put them in the rear calliper and used the good pads in the front.

You'll need to give the calliper a good degrease too. Oil is good a lurking in small gaps and then migrating over surfaces.

White spirit tends to leave an oily residue. You could try baking them in the oven for an hour at 200 C, but i'd bin them personally!

chris -sorry if it sounded insulting, I did assume you had the intelligence not to leave the pads in the white spirit ๐Ÿ™‚ my poor writing there
