Hi

Can someone explain the different mounts/adapters for disc brakes. I'll be needing to buy some as I'm building a bike (for the first time) and when I've checked them out the diammeter is straight forwards but I don't know what IS and Post mount mean. Can anyone explain?

I have also been looking at getting new forks and some come with 20mm Maxles. I currently have bog standard QR and would like to know if my wheels would fit the Maxle or what would I need to make them fit?

Cheers

Most forks are now post mount, most frames are IS mount.

Post mount has the bolt holes 74mm apart and they are threaded.

I.S mount is 51mm between the bolt holes.

Callipers are now nearly all post mount so you will just need the correct adapters to suit the fork / frame and rotor size.

With regards to your wheel, unless a conversion kit is available for the hub you'll need a new hub / wheel.

Cheers bud, well clear now. If I can fire another question at you, are different brand rotors compatable with different callipers/units? I have XT brakes for the new bike and Avid rotors on the old one. Are these compatable? (As long as I set up for the right diameter)

Once you know what disc brakes your going for and rotor size have a check at my classified ad as I have mounts available for sale. 203mm and 185mm in both post to post and IS to post.
