Oh the wonders of education. I'm fully applied to uni now, got student finance, accomodation applied for etc.. But now i have an issue..

I've applied to Sheffield (yay) but from what i've seen on the web / while i was there bike storage isn't one of the greatest aspects on the place and i'm probably going to only take one bike there (unless anyone can suggest bike storage alternatives). So.. which bike? I currently own a Giant Trance 1 which is a great bike but i put a couple of dents in the bottom of the frame on the friendly peaks rocks last time i was there for holiday.. A ragley Blue Pig, built up quite hardcore with pikes, single chainring up front, chain device.. And the road bike.

So, what are my best chances? I hope to ride a whole manner of stuff really.. i enjoy dh and hacking around woods but the singletrack in the peaks is too much to pass on and i think my ragley in its current guise would be unsuitable.

I ask now as if buying a new bike / major makeover for the ragley is going to be one of the options then i will need to do a fair bit of saving.

any advice appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

That's three bikes, so not a dilemma. I hope your university education will succeed where secondary has failed.

Well despite not having a university education I think Ive got it sorted for you ๐Ÿ™‚

1) Take the Trance, remove the wheels after each ride and keep it in a bike bag in your accommodation

2) Find a kindly local with a lock up - this is Sheffield so not sure if kindly locals exist LOL

3) Take all of your bikes, stash them in something like Big Yellow storage and use a rat bike to nip down whenever you want to ride something tasty, said rat bike also would be a safe thief proof means of student transport around town too

Simples as young people say!!

PS I have just put the contents of our spare room into Big Yellow to decorate, I reckon Id have got 2 or maybe 3 bikes in it and they are charging me 7 quid a week after some haggling

Sack off the bikes.

Stock up on condoms and enjoy.

LOL @ druidh, you just can't let go of the fact that you know what "dilemma" means!

when i first moved to Leeds I had the same problem. Uni staff wouldn't let me keep bikes in my room, instead suggesting I keep them in the unlocked bike shed at the far end of the car park, right near where the chavs climpb over the fence. Get a job, pubs are good, most pubs are suprisingly secure, keep your bikes in the cellar, worke out for me!

How far from home are you going. Take a rat bike and scope the place out,....... So many folk get their bikes stolen in the first week because the nazi halls staff make them keep em outside - then after a month or so relax a bit. A rat bike will be very important to you for getting places in most cases .

are you staying in halls? I'm at sheffield uni, so i can give you some tips. Email in profile, and visit www.weridebikes.co.uk too.

there are friendly locals, ways to get around leaving bikes in residences and storage firms can be used, although they're a PITA for those spur of the moment rides. Got a choice of meadowhell, hillsbro, parkway and centre of town; all of which aren't close to any of the routes out to the peaks.
