[#10220287]

I rode an unrestricted commuter ebike the other day, bloody marvellous! Almost 30mph on the flat (with a fair bit of effort) it made popping into town a pleasure.

I imagine I could have done some really good eroding or whatever.

it was a Bafang kit build if anyone’s interested. Heartily recommended if you need to go fast and don’t give two hoots about the law.

If you want to do 30mph, why not just get an actual moped?

Hang on, hang on,

(with a fair bit of effort)

I thought the idea of ebikes was that it did it all for you with no effort?

Don't be stoopid. Weren't you listening.. . Ebikers put in just as much effort. They just go further, and have more fun, or something.

So do ebike utility cyclists go to the shops that are further away?

So what’s the issue here, ahhh that the op cannot pedal 30mph on a standard bicycle. 😱

I really hate to be pedantic, but it wasn't a "de-restricted ebike", it was unrestricted. To be de-restricted, it would have had to have been restricted and then modified, but it seems to have been built as an unrestricted ebike from scratch.

Saw loads of them in NYC earlier in the year, they do get a move on !

I really hate to be pedantic too,  that's why I don't do it...  😉

problem with 30+ is it'll kill your battery, rapidly, a steady 24mph is decent! 😆

saw one the other day it was like a vespa with pedals (q factor off the chart!) no plates or lights and indicators doing about 25 up hill legs tucked in pedals spinning/flailing (didn't look very well balanced or straight) away looked scary as ****!

Yeah that's about right if you also have sensible gearing to handle the hills, I've set mine to a max of 23mph using either thumb throttle or motor assisted from my crank revolutions,  bafang is non torque sensing - better for me than my scott e-genius with bosch cx torque sensing motor.

If it's not torque sensing does that mean it just outputs a constant torque as long as you're pedaling? Other than having a motorbike throttle rather than having to pedal, what's the advantage.

My OH's got the suntour one with the torque sensing chainring and parents have the bosch motors.

I can adjust the level of power/torque settings using the handlebar unit, i have mine set so i have 1 through to 9 settings available so i can tailer the output i desire, you can have 1 through to 5 or 1 through to 3 but i imagine the jumps between motor output are more noticeable with fewer settings.

Almost 30mph on the flat

Pathetic.

Neighbours had a cargo bike at 45mph the other week. Electric mopeds are awesome.

You basically manually adjust the torque with the assist levels. It's not an advantage, torque sensing would be better I think. I've never tried it though, just know that bafang is probably a little less sophistaticated, don't really notice that on smooth stuff, but on rougher stuff I think torque sensing would be more desirable to have.

Anyone aware of somebody who has actually had an unrestricted e-bike registered as a moped/motorbike with plates etc.?

I've never had a desire to own an actual moped*, but I like the idea of riding a nice hardtail up hills at moped speeds on the road.

*Actually, I do like a nice Honda Cub..

In Amsterdam ATM, client's office have bikes to borrow for going to meetings at other sites etc.  One is a normal e-bike, one has a number plate on the back.. so very tempted to take it for a razz!

My vague understanding is it is rather hard to do on a individual basis. There are various essays on the net where people went through the hassle and it is essays since looks like it takes forever. Best to buy an actual electric moped where the manufacturer/importer has gone through all the hassle.

Not a Troll, you dreadful sausages, just a little feedback from someone who’s actually ridden one. Can you fit a motor on that high horse of yours?

I rode a bike the other day, bloody marvellous! Almost 30mph on the flat (with a fair bit of effort) it made popping into town a pleasure.

I also drove a car today, absolutely riotous. Almost 50mph on a 50 road (with a fair bit of effort).

it was a BMW if anyone’s interested. Heartily recommended if you need to go fast and don’t give two hoots about the environment.

I've never ridden an e-bike but I did borrow this from my brother in law in Portugal the other week. It was brilliant/lethal/terrifying...

Ain't cars great Toasty?,  I can't wait till i get my MK2 Golf GTI back on the road, 1900 cc of popping and barking petrol'ey smelling goodness, The twin carb set-up isn't the most fuel efficient and with the current state of engine tune i'm lucky if i see 20mpg at anything above 4000rpm but who really cares?, i just love the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons on a frosty morning.

Sounds like the BMW was a hoot to drive, ultimate driving machine eh?

Bregante I too have ridden one of those things (uncles place in France many years ago), hard to forget the terror of trying to get it to stop with rim brakes against an engine. Rode it every day though as bonkers fun

He's bought another one for my sister based on a step through Dutch bike!

The laws were different, I’m wasn’t in the UK. Unrestricted / derestricted, the bike was legal.

Unfortunately I was 4 sheets to the wind and off to get more, but that’s bye the bye.

Sweden has this kind of thing. E-bikes, scooters and moped can not be required to have a numberplate and can be ridden on cycle paths, but not roads (I think), but you can register the mopeds and then ride them on the road. They get to go faster or something.

The thing is, it's just wrong to see a scooter on a cycle path. Ok, it's usually an Uber Eats bloke with a phone in one hand navigating to drop off food to some lazy bastards, but it's still wrong.

Loads of people have e-bikes though and they have recently started up an e-scooter sharing thing.

Er, I can briefly exceed 30 with a fair bit of effort without a motor.

I'd heartily recommend a cheap carbon road bike from PX if you want to go fast and don't give two hoots about brand snobbery.

er... You can HOLD 30mph+ on a deristricted 170mm travel FS Emtb with 2.5 minions OFF-ROAD (and it does actually take effort) I heartily recommend trying it before getting caught up in fitness snobbery.

I love riding my carbon TCR but a de-restricted Emtb is next ****ing level.

I have mine set at 25mph, which I think is probably comparable to the speed I might pedal on the flat. 15mph is not good on an ebike (regardless of the law), as you are constantly getting up to speed, then you are trying to pedal a 50lb behemoth, so you slow, then the motor kicks in and so on and so forth

If you don't know what speed you'd pedal on the flat it is a fair old bet that you wouldn't hold 25mph for any length of time.  20mph (32kmh) is a challenging speed to sustain on a road bike.  25mph is what old school time triallists (before aero) would aim for as a benchmark of hardman-ism.  I've done normal road bike commuting 5 days a week sprinting off the lights and hitting 25mph+ when I feel good... but you can't do that every journey (and I was an old school time triallist).

I think e-bikes are brilliant having just rented one for the first time out in Livigno.

This seems pertinent to STW: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/25/older-men-using-e-bikes-behind-rising-death-toll-among-dutch-cyclists

From the link above:

We should not underestimate how many accidents happen among the elderly when getting on and off an e-bike.
