Is there a decent dry chain lube for road bikes that will not facilitate the build up of that black gunk which infects road bike chains? At the moment I wipe the chain down after every ride and treat it to some GT85 and I can sort of keep on top of it but when the weather deteriorates it becomes intolerable.

I've been using muc-off dry lube which seems very black paste free so far. not tried it in the wet much, though.

White Lightning Epic is usually pretty good, although Squirt lube is proving excellent on the MTB at the moment.

i agree muc-off dry lube is very good in dry dusty and damp conditons and the wet lube is good for wet cold conditons. personally GT85 just isnt good enuf on its own. allso get a good chain cleaner cost you £30-£40 but they are magic and prolong the life of your chain and help stop the build up of that black stuff.

I've been using this Rock Oil Chain Lube on all my bikes this summer, must admit I've been very very impressed, chain is cleanish, dry and noisless, I've just reapplyed it for the first time since May (?) Haven't used it in the wet as yet though.

sapper I used to use chain cleaners but find it easier to take the chain off and give it a bath in degreaser, dry off, re-lube and then fit.

Otherwise, thanks all for the input, at least I have somewhere to start now. 🙂 As we all know, there's often a world of difference between manufacturer's claims and reality!

Finish Line Dry. Lube chain, wipe off excess, ride. It's the best I've used so far.

Dry lubes are rubbish in winter, they just wash off. I'm using finish line ceramic wet lube (used to be called pro road) which is ace.

Second the squirt! Clean as a whistle and lasts for ages.

White Lightning Epic used here for the last 3 or so years - best I have found for not getting completely gunked up. LBS said Finish Line pro was very good but you needed to stay on top of keeping the chain clean.

Swear by Rock'n'Roll extreme or Rock'n'Roll Gold goes on as a liquid get an old bath towel and polish till clean. Alledged to contain anti static properties which is what even on a dry ride causes all the road dust to be attracted to the chain from the build up of static. One application on the road bike lasted daily between 70-110 miles and even then minimal muck on the chain. Think CRC still sell it just make sure that you soak the chain before polishing-no more chainring marks on the legs and a claen chain should you need to drop the wheel out for a puncture.
On the MTB used all year round with no associated problems at -8C and below that wax lubes suffer of the chain going stiff.
