Thinking about a little jaunt from Passau, Germany to Geleti in Romania following the Danube all the way. Has anyone got any experiences of this route? The guide book by 'Ciccone' (or someone or other) is getting bad reviews on amazon for being out of date, can anyone point to some good literature/ a blog?

yes, did the whole lot last summer, and it was awesome...
look at "crazyguyonabike" site and search danube. There are quite a few journal tales of the same trip; mine is called "botley to the black sea"
For guides look at the "Cycline" books, there is a set of four or five that cover the whole route from Donaueschingen to the end at Constanta or the delta.

enjoy!

Yeah, I went from Le Havre to Budapest along this route. You can pick up all the books you need along the way really. The official route takes you on some really strange detours sometimes to avoid roads which we really wouldn't consider busy. Something to bear in mind if you're trying to make progress.
There was chuffing great hill on one of the bends at Hainburg between Vienna and Bratislava just past Wolfsthal. Hell of a view and well worth the ride up. Oh yeah, nice YHA in Passau in an old castle up on the hill to the north of the town.
Just looking back at my pics. You'll have a great time!

The company I work for will sell you a self-guided tour to Vienna from Passau staying in 3 and 4 star hotels. It's a reasonable price this year. E-mail in profile if you're interested.
