Planning a ride in the Dales this weekend and just wondering what the conditions were like re. Snow. Anyone got any local input?

Either Kirby Malzeard or Kilnsey/mastiles area. I suspect that one might be snowy as it goes quite high.

KirKby Malzeard over to Nidderdale should be reasonable I'd think, probably an easier bet than Kilnsey. Forecast for Ripon area isn't so bad for tomorrow but maybe more 'moist' on Sunday.

Thanks folks, Kirby Malzeard sounds like it could be a plan.

I'm in Skipton and my road has a covering of snow. The hills over Malham way look well covered as well. Saying that, at the moment it would still be ok if a little (lot) boggy.

Have you ridden there before Ashy?

Yes a few times, including winter, but I'll be no fun if its a total snow slog! Any better recommendations?
Cheers

Its been a long time since i rode the mastiles and it was very muddy. Not sure if its had any work done. Nidderdales usually a safe bet when its muddy.

Worth knowing, thank you. Any good rides? Only looking for something 15ish miles.

The car was frozen up when I got back to it this evening (Cononley just South of Skipton). The forecast is for either snow showers or rain showers on icy ground.

As for a ride. Maybe Hetton on to Boss Moor, over to Kilnsey, up Mastiles Lane until you can turn for Lee Gate farm, round to Bordley, then Weets Top, down to Winterburn reservoir and then back to Hetton.

Lovely pics. It warmed up briefly today and is subzero now so it will be icy on the roads at valley level in the morning.

Not too much snow on the lower ground although Blubberhouses was well covered this morning so I expect Malham will be as well. Probably still rideable but might be a slog. Nidderdale might be a better bet as Harrogate to Ripon is virtually snow free.

Off out in 20 mins now when I have had a spot of lunch. From home (Austwick), there is a couple of inches on the ground, bright sunshine, not much wind. Will be scooting round Ingleborough and Penyghent but suffering with a cold so won't be going too far.

Went for a quick blast around Nidderdale this morning. Stayed fairly low down (Nidderdale way out of Pateley Bridge), there were heavy snow showers on and off all day. Mostly rideable snow 1-3 inches lower down but any higher up would probably impede progress. Good fun though and nice to get out, I would anticipate the proper Dales to be rather unrideable on the high ground unless you own a fatbike!

The conditions were indeed fine. Fantastic ride, only my tracks (I had it all to myself), snow very grippy, very dry and wonderful. out the same again today (later).

Is that up near thieves moss?

Still looks like rather hard work!

Thieves Moss - yes.

hard work, no. very grippy, just the effort of the front wheel pushing in so maybe needed to be one gear less, but other than that, fantastic.
