[#6253676]

So attempting a cyclecross build gents, could use your help.

I have bits and bobs lying around with the aim of building bike for commuting but also for doing the odd MTB adventure/sillyness on.

I love the idea of having a 1X gearing if thats possible when i want to use for road use?
Disc brakes i dont really care about.

Firstly need a frame...( ideally no higher spend than 300 ish)
I have following;
Road shifters (shimano)
Handlebar (road)
11-28 cassette( probably too road focused)
Front and rear derailleur( road)
saddle/seatpost (road)
Road crankset( fulcram, can i make this into a 1X gear sytem?)
Really fancy a bit of a project,so any advice be great in regards to gearing ect.

There was a thread a week ago about 1x10 cx bikes. Problem is getting a clutch Mech to work with road shifters.

There was a solution but it required a new shifter.

I guess a NW chainring and chain guide would work.

You just need a well setup chain guide, no need for a clutch mech or a narrow wide chainring.

Oh and its cyclocross not cyclecross!

fwiw i run 1 x10 on my Gryphon - 105 shifter with 9 spd xt med cage rear mech, no chain guide, chain one plus link rather than 2, Middleburn Uno front chainring - very very few chain drops even when riding at trail centres like Brechfa.

38T front on the road would be fine with 11-28 unless you live in the Fens and have thighs like Cav.

I have 2 CX bikes both 1 x 10 with 40 Surly chainring and 11-36 cassette, 105 STI and MTB rear mechs. Using N Gear Stops just cause I had a couple but I haven't dropped a chain yet. SDW the other day, I dropped but the chain didn't.........

ive heard before like some of you have said about 1x not working with road shifters ect.

Other option is keep my road crankset and replace chainrings on it( its a fulcram racing one.

another option that mate suggested is buy a cheap cx bike on web then move parts over, and seen a few complete bikes for around 400.

just want to know if it worth while trying to keep road parts for project or selling them all and starting fresh.

forgot to add, thinking of a paul milnes frame as they seem pretty decent, then just matter of trying to transfer things over to it.

This will depend if 1x gearing possible, if not then il have try try a standard cx gearing, hopefully still being able to use my current fulcram crankset if possible, if not il sell it and buy something else.

Why? I reckon the problem you're going to have if you're planning to ride on and off road is simply getting ratios that work for both with a single front ring, unless you're mostly riding flattish stuff. Something like a compact double with an 11-32 on the back is a pretty decent compromise for both ime. But hey, it's all personal preference etc.

That's what I'm worried about. To be honest I think 1x might not work looking at my daily commute.

With regards to having a compact chain set will that give me enough gears for a off road race/ fun?( have a 28 cassette)

If need be I guess I could change my big ring for something smaller?

So far I know only my brakes can't be moved over but from what you guys saying I can move shifters+chain set+ derailuers too?
This be great as means just need a frame and brakes+wheel set them I'm sorted:).

I guess it depends a little on you, but I've found - bear in mind that I'm in the Peak, so there are lots of hills - that a 34/50 compact combined with a 11-32 mtb cassette gives you enough low down to climb pretty much anything off road, but still works on the road.

I've ridden a Cotic X with, I think, 11-27, and that was hard going on off road climbs, though fine on the road, but you can always try the 28 and see how it goes and if you need a lower gear, swap it for a 32?

I don't race cross, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with that set-up.

+1

That's pretty much what I run (although I think my cassette is a 12-27, but can't remember for sure), and although it's a compromise it's a pretty workable one in my experience.

Might be people talking about shifter/mech combinations. Like how road 10s doesn't work well with mtb 10s

Sram and Campag are worth looking at if you want a "clean" look. The shifter mechanisms are easily removable leaving you with just a brake lever.
