As said, compact road (maybe with a 48 outer) - just the ticket.

Normal road on a standard CX bike.
But CX bikes should run 44:16 fixed at the very least. Everyone knows that.

For proper CX racing something close like 36/46.
For general versatility, 34/48

Compact road 50/36 with a 11-25 chainset seems to work best for cross and road use.

Anything less than 50 up front would limit it's road potential IMO.

Only missed a triple when doing fully loaded tours, a double looks better too.

34/46 and a 13-29 cassette on mine, great for general trail riding and have toured the length of Ireland with it like that

Have wheels with a 12-25 cassette for road work...which I use about twice a year

Anything with three chain rings is a tourer isn't it?
😉

+1

Maybe even a standard 34/50 for general versatility if you ride somewhere flattish.

Be aware that you won't be able to fit anything smaller than a 39t* on a Standard double. A Compact (with its smaller BCD) may give you more versatility if you want to change rings around.

(*possible 38t, but I'm happy to be proven wrong).

Thanks for all these, I ran a single 44 up front with a 11-32 or something pretty wide on the back for racing. It seemed to work pretty well but I do tend to grind and bare it rather than spin up any inlines. Trying to learn to spin a lot more this year so may stick with the double compact for now.

i'm using the cranks from my mtb, wanged on a single 38t and using 12-28 cassette. fine for me off road
if going double for more road use i'd probably use a 36t and 46 something like that or maybe 34-44, if hilly area?
