I know Afan and Glycor.... are 20 minutes away, but I'd like to see whats closer to home as it were.

I don't know the trails around Crynant particularly well, but there is plenty of forestry around there. The Sarn Helen roman road runs from Aberdulais up to Brecon and there are plenty of tracks off that.
I'm based in Swansea, we have a ride on wednesday mornings if you want to join us (normally between 2 and 4 of us, about 3 - 4 hours).
The rides I would recommend, if you want to travel down this way -
Kilvey Hill, on the eastern edge of Swansea. Old xc race routes, newer DH/freeride trails. Easily a couple of hours of riding, and also my local trails (I'm a very lucky boy!). Dirt magazine did an article about it a few months back.
Gower - check out the route map on this site somewhere. A lovely ride, views, steep climbs, hill forts, icecreams. What more do you need?
