. Clearance at the bottom of the fork means the cruds unfortunately don't fit. Is there any clip on guards that might be even thinner?

If you mean at the fork crown, the sks race blade longs only have the thin metal bracket between the fork crown and the tyre, no mud guard material there, so fit in quite tight fitting spaces.
