I've just come upon this issue as no self extrator cap and the bolt just unscrewed leaving the cranks in place and it's a different thread to my old-school extractor so can't use that. People mention above that it falls off and use threadlock so you don't lose it, but how the hell does that happen when the crank bolt is through it and has never been off a relatively new bike?!
So are Sram or the bike assemblers (Orrange in this case) shipping without the self extracting cap?!
As you push the crank off from inside the ring it’s not captive

its a cap over the bolt with a large hole through to allow you to access the undo bits, as you unscrew it should remove the crank arm.
The cap is missing, a gentle persuade with a non metal hammer is the answer.

I doubt it, but I've not had one fall off... they are £7.99 from Amazon (not Sram, but will work and next day del)
You can buy new rings fairly cheaply on ebay i think
I’m not sure a hammer would work. The torque in the bolt is large. Even with a bar getting the crank off is an issue

Torque is 54Nm having done this recently, that is the point just past "this is never coming off" pop and it does.
I found I just unwound mine and it self extracted ok, maybe I was lucky.

I've lost about four of the pesky things! I'm swapping my one remaining one between the other bikes when I need to get the cranks off...
If you're planning a trip to Ballater any time soon keep an eye out, my one fell off on the gravel road up to Heartbreak Ridge last month so you can have that if you see it.
I find that they tend to fall off when the crankset is new and hasn’t ever been removed. Once I have removed the crankset, the removal process seems to tighten the outer cap because it has a left hand thread and tightens as the extractor bolt is undone whilst rotating hard against the cap. If that makes any sense.
Remove the cap, clean the threads and then apply non permanent threadlock, a good preventative measure.
Thanks all - I ordered a new one and tool - don't remember ever noticing it there tbh so maybe as mentioned it fell off when the bike was new.
i deliberately take mine off and leave it in my toolbox
