windy, raining and 6 degrees on the walk from the house to the shed.
I was going to ride to Bristol this morning, but heavy rain was forecast which I didn't fancy. It's only drizzling now however it's forecast to be heavy in the afternoon rush hour so maybe I made the right call.
Not me. It was -3 here and all of my 15.5m commute is on cycle paths that aren't gritted. I had a big spill last year and it's just not worth it.
I thought it was a bit warmer than yesterday. lifelong smugness here.
I did yesterday, house stat showed -1 when i set off. Only 12 miles each way but enjoyed it.

I try to avoid sub zero commutes as crashes hurt but it is nice when the world is all frosty!
Yup. Not sure what the temperature was but certainly below zero. 30 miles* of country roads spoiled only slightly by two people nearly taking me out. Hey ho.
Much prefer sub-zero temperatures to the horrible just-above-zero-but-damp weather that chills me to the bone. Only problem is having to endure the few minutes of agony while my toes defrost in the shower (and yes, I have extra-insulated winter boots and warm socks… just no circulation in my digits).

Not me, sub zero is when i stop commuting. Too many untreated surfaces with nearby puddles spreading a nice film of water over them. Did yesterday though, 18 miles to work in just above freezing temps and arrived in a snow/sleet/hail downpour which meant I feel OK with Rules 5 & 9.
Wore my winter boots for the first time yesterday - toasty toes.
No bike for me today...
Will probably put my mudguards on this weekend though.

21.2 miles and the temperature was around minus 1 degree. Still a fairly respectable 17mph average despite the cold.
I've still not warmed up from last night's ride home, I'd left the bike at work previously so got a lift in the morning then discovered I'd not changed my office spare kit I'd planned to wear home over from fingerless mitts and summer bibs yet. bare legs was not fun.
This morning wasn't so bad by comparison.

14 miles, mixture of road, cycle path and dirt. It was above zero (just) but the wind was bitterly cold.
There were patches of ice on the roads but claggy mud on the trails.

Brakes freezing up didn't help me much today. Guessing either water in the cable or just the rotor itself. Hopefully a bit warmer on the way home to avoid this.

Caught the train as I'm resting this week and have a sore throat. The trike is great, but you can't run code whilst pedaling it!
I rode 45 km home from a club ride one night last year, when I got in I mentioned I wasn't really cold but had "brain freeze". Looked at the temp outside and it was dry but -10C. I don't mind the cold to be honest.
Bit parkie sat outside the pub last night, mind you laughing at gaz's stay on crash kept us giggling for an hour or so.
Yep, I’m in - 25 miles in minus 4 for me, although bone dry so no ice risk. Bit parky but all good!
Cheated a bit (drove the first 10km across sheffield, rode the more interesting 2nd) as I was running late this morning, but it was a lovely ride in. First outing of long tights rather than 3/4s this winter...
14 miles today, rural Angus into the edge of Dundee. -7C on departure, colder up on the top of the Sidlaws as the first sliver of light appeared out over the North Sea. Really dry air, so the trails were fast and grippy; no ice to speak of, either on the hill or on the road links. The return ride home tonight might be bright enough to switch the lights off, as there's a decent moon and a good dusting of snow on the ground. Winter gloves, boots and a skull cap help quite a bit.
Anyone else find they slow down massively in the cold? For me it seems to be about a 2mph drop in average speed when it gets below about 5 degrees. Might just be that I'm wearing extra layers but the hills seem like harder work too.
Didn't seem that cold in Manchester, more like 3 or 4deg - really hoping the rain holds off this afternoon, but at least it's homeward and everything will be going in the wash

-4 in Newcastle, only 7 miles. Icy minor roads but my winter tyres have come in to their own.
thepurist - yes. Your muscles just don't work as well at the lower temperatures and your body is using energy trying to keep warm. Your brain is also sending the 'er this isn't right' signals which doesn't help either.
4.5 mile run pre work, was 1deg, but felt shit loads colder, for the first couple of miles anyway. No as dodgy as cycling on icy roads, and warm up quicker too.
21km, mainly offroad in -4C (according to my Garmin). Liked crunching through the ice.
Took a while for my thumbs to warm up though.
Motorcycle commute for me as per usual. Interesting to note that windchill isn’t as low as I’d expect only -12’C
Much preferred it to the wet sleety ride back home though.
