Anyone used them much?
Have popped in a few of times over the years and on every occasion found them a bit grumpy and disinclined to answer questions.
Do they actually get friendlier if you buy a bike from them? Am interested in a bike they currently have in, but I'd rather pay a bit more and buy somewhere else if they are going to remain this miserable.
I've always found them grumpy - they are quite famous for it locally!
They do have some nice stock though and did once order me a frame and then send it back because it was the wrong colour without complaint.
Some people are naturally like that i suppose. I would rather deal with them than the ignorant and lazy wannabe heroes at LeisureLakes/Bury.
Ta, Muddydwarf, not just me then?
They have a road bike in I quite fancy, but wouldn't even check the crank length for me when I asked and seemed very reluctant to provide info regarding the bike!
Reluctantly showed me a couple of tourers hidden away upstairs, but again, getting any info was like pulling teeth.
We've just popped into Leisure Lakes Bury for a front tyre as Cooksons closed on Sunday. Would appear to be staffed exclusively by truculent sixth formers.
Always been grumpy always will be. Thought they would have been less grumpy if you were intrested in a road bike. Good stock of clothing though.
Me, I would spend my money at Cooksons, by far the best shop in the area.
+1 on the miserable, grumpy thing. I went in a few years back with a pocket full of cash ready to buy a new bike but the guy (Paulson himself I think), was so disinterested and unhelpful that I walked away and haven't walked back since.
I ended up going over to Cookson's too and got excellent, friendly service - just what you'd hope for in a LBS.
I've not been back since even though CP is only a couple of miles away.
I also agree on the Leisure Lakes thing Muddy....it's fine as long as you're not in a hurry and don't mind being ignored at the front desk for half-an-hour or so.
+2, paulsons have been grumpy for at least 15 years.
Last month a mate was interested in buying a bike. We went into LeisureLakes and were comprehensively ignored for around 25 minutes.
Two blokes in their 40's, prime targets for sales staff due to disposable incomes etc yet the 'truculent 6th formers' were too busy trying to act important to their kiddy friends to approach us* - we walked and went to Cooksons where we were instantly seen by friendly and informative staff.
*I too have done the bit at LL standing at the sales counter with goods in my hand and being ignored by the staff.
The staff in that particular branch are rude, ignorant, self-important and appalling at their jobs.
Mrs MD works in retail and tells me she would have sacked the lot of them on the spot for their approach to the job.
Only averagely miserable for a bikeshop...but prices can be top dollar as in more than RRP (if I'd not known rrp for shimano mechs they would have got away with it.)
LL Bury are pretty bad although they can have their moments. Got my Stumpjumper from them 3 years ago and the 2 guys who served me were brilliant. Things went downhill from the 6 week check (rear brake pads not in properly), been in a few times since but will only use them now if I want something fast on a Sunday and don't need any help otherwise it's Ride On everytime.
Another for the Paulson grumpy reception club. Never managed to raise a smile out of them.
I don't know if they have a problem with light fingered people or not, but the staff seem to follow you around the shop too, which spoils the shiny bit browsing I tend to do before buying something boring and practical ๐
i once asked paulson about ways of reducing weight on my bike , he advised a haircut and a shite .he can sometimes be seen on the back of a tandem looking as if he's just been sentenced to death and has to ride to meet his fate.
They are notoriously miserablists.
But I do have some sympthathy with them when someone says 'how do I lighten my bike?' How may times can you say 'put some light bits on'.
It's not cold fusion, it's very simple.
It's 15years since i last went in there. Not suprised they're still the same - i wonder why nowhere else has opened up locally and taken their market share?
At the time i liked the little shop in Newhey that shared premises with the car mechanics place, shame that closed down.

i bought my first proper bike from the owner of that shop. what was it called??
Cooksons are ace.
So are DJ Cycles in Rammy (maybe a bit closer to Rochdale too) - open on Sunday I think.
Ooh i remember that one in Newhey - i introduced the manager to a female friend of mine and now they are married with a child! ๐
All young lads if i recall. Probably in the wrong location to succeed - how many of the retards in Newhey ride bikes?
I had an ounce of business sense i would love to open a shop in Rochdale but i haven't the money, contacts or nous to do it... ๐

No way, really - fancy that!
It was literally across the road from my brother's house. I went out with them a couple of times when the Rocky Mountain team came over for a promo visit.
The guy who ran it was really helpful, even though as a kid i didn't really have that much money to spend with them.
Do you remember when it was burnt out coz one of the mechanics set light to a car's fuel line when doing some welding - they had to operate out of ISO containers until it was rebuilt.
peachos - I can't remember the name either... ๐

Oooh..DJ Cycles have passed under my radar...open Sundays and until 8pm on Thursday...radical ideas for a bike shop

haha i went out on that ride. went over blackstone edge didnt it?! and it was of the era of will longden's RM sponsorship - he came out with us on that ride too.
Chris,Paul & sons apparently.
Yes they are infamous localy for being grumpy, however i use them fairly frequently and find them OK.
Leisure Lakes Bury are by far the worst bike shop i have ever used, appauling service. Not been in for 3 years and intend to keep it that way, i will use the grumpy sods at Chris Paulsons.
