Does anyone have any thoughts on this:

I'm after a HT to mainly commute on, canal paths with a bit of singletrack and road. Stuck up a WTD in the classifieds but no joy yet, haven't seen much on eBay but just spotted this thats in my budget.

Nah, get a road bike instead.
Much better for commuting, & there not that fragile.

For mixed riding? Crossbike, yes - road bike, not sure it could cope with the singletrack bit of the commute.

That Carrera looks fine for the money, I'd stick some narrower tyres on for the road bits though.

If you're trying to keep the cost down, do you really need 100mm, wide tyres disc brakes ? Had a quick look at Dales - maybe something at 80mm instead with slightly narrower tyres eg http://www.dalescycles.com/SALE_Scott_Voltage_YZ_2_p/09scottvoltyz2.htm ?

I thought it'd be good to have the option, of being able to take it out for the occasional off road winter blast, kind of a capable hack bike?

That's where the preference for discs come from and not going for a subway or something.
