Do you actually need one?

You'll get paint chips without one, yes, but you don't need a full neoprene wrap around type thing - a few layers of duct tape on the bottom of the swing arm will do, or heli tape, or velcro, or sticky backed rubber, or whatever else.

Old inner tube works will preserve the paint and keep it a little quieter

Got one on each side of mine, I ride toe'd out, so prevents the heels wearing through the swing-arm, keep rotating it as it wears through.
