A mate at work has a carbon Boardman rigid MTB with a 42-30 chainset, he's using the bike for commuting and the 42 chainring isn't up to the job, ideally he needs a 48-38 chainset to fit a 73mm bottom bracket.

Any recommendations?

he will likely need a new front mech or need to get creative bending it to make it work nicely with bigger chainrings.

He may also run into a chainring/chainstay interfact on an MTB

could just change the chainrings on his existing chainset for the biggest that wont clash with his chainstays ?

i currently run an FSA tempo square taper compact 34-50. its great for commuting.

Will be changing to an XT hollowtech touring triple - 26-36-48 as for climbing fully laden the 34:32 lowest gear isnt enough.
