Hi folks
I've got a Fox DH air shock on my 5 spot and people rave about CCDB shocks and was wondering if it would be worth getting one and getting rid of the Fox.
Anybody else fitted a CCDB to a Turner 5 Spot or done the above to any bike and how much of a diffetrence did it make?
Cheers
Ken
Ask toons, he's just fitted a CCDB to his DW 5 spot.
Check out my post from about a month ago on my observations of fitting a CCDB to a DW Spot and the benefits vs an RP23. In short - very very impressed.
Mate JFDI!
I've not fitted one to a Turner but I have done back to back testing between a DHX Air, Boost Valve RP23 and Cane Creek on my current bike - a Nicolai Helius AM.
The Cane Creek is a paradigm shift. Simple as that. It's truly brilliant.
You can tune the low speed compression so that it gives you a firm feel for pumping the bike, you can tune the low speed rebound to pop you out of corners or off jumps; the damper opens up on even the smallest ripple in the trail even with full LSC wound on because small ripples are high speed compressions. I found that other dampers inhibit the initial part of the travel and reduce sensitivity on small impacts when using lots of 'pro-pedal' but the Cane Creek doesn't work in the same way so you get the very best of both worlds.
The net result in terms of how the bikes feels can be summarised as thus:
- No pedal bob at all; loads of power transfer and better efficiency
- Setting the low speed compression and low speed rebound allows you to set the bike up to allow you to pump through shallow compressions, push the bike into turns and then pop out of them with an extra burst of speed.
- Soooo much grip over roots and rocks; you carry speed way better and the bike feels more composed, more in control and better balanced going into corners as a result.
- You feel less tired and more confident that the bike isn't going to do something unexpected.
I do know a couple of guys who are using them on their DW link Turners. They may be the chaps referenced above - Adam and James. Guys if you're on here maybe you could add your thoughts? From what they've told me they think the CCDB is also every bit as good as people say.
One word of advice though - don't order it with a Ti spring. Cane Creek only supply 3" and 3.5" stroke springs which are about twice the length you'd need for a Five Spot and therefore twice the weight they would need to be. Nuke Proof fit fine and are half the price.
Ken, you'll notice the difference in the first ride.
The travel feels endless and the rear grip is unbelievable.
If you're worried about the weight buy a nuke proof TI spring.

Yep that's me!
Also v impressed with support from Cane Creek. Despite buying mine 2nd hand, Colin in US very happy to provide me with suggestions on starting settings that were bike-specific.
Oh - and having seen GeeTee ride, he certainly puts his to good effect!
Hi Adam - how was the holiday?
I saw your Five Spot in HFTH the other day. Have some very good new trails to show you when you're up for it. Am heading out Friday after work if you're interested.
V good hols - no mtb-ing but a load of road riding thru the mountains where you get your buzz from overtaking cars thru hairpin bends!!
5-Spot went in for some stuff I hate doing (brake bleed, fork service etc)while I was away. Good to rock and roll now tho!
Am heading out tonight with James around my local patch but from memory it was a bit far for you mid-week. Prob not around tomorrow but will PM you to get together soon.
Would any body else who has had experience of going from:
Good air shock (rp23) to normal coil shock (fox dh4/5 etc) to CCDB
As most people who have commented seem to have gone (or want to go) from air to ccdb and thats quite a jump.
Rik, I sort of did! I've got a DHX5 on my Highline and rode that before getting the CCDB.
Does that count?
