There sees to be a mixed opinion on this from searching online, although the suggestion is that it's ok as long as you don't overtighten the clamp.
So what's the stw opinion/advice ?

I have had no problem with mine, 2010 carbon Orbea Onyx + Thule 591 carrier. Even drove it through a car park height restriction barrier. Snapped the barrier in two and only damage to bike was a buckled back wheel. You live and learn!
