[Closed] Can Cateye ABS 30 Halogen lights be converted to LED?

And is it worth it...I've got 3 sets of these lights, 10W wide beam / 20W spot, nicely machined, NiMh batteries, but compared to the lumens that LED lights develop they seem a bit wanting.
Thought that someone might know if this can be done, and if it's worth doing, or better still, know someone who provides this service.
thanks

Nothing yet then, which may mean that they can't, or that I asked the question at a daft time and it vanished off the page before those who know the answer to such things were about.
Here's trying again, in hope that someone can shed some light on this matter.

Probably best to speak to Trout from here or Luminous or the person that started the Lumicycle conversion thread. IRC Trout trasferred a Cateye triple shot into a proper bright jobbie.

I remember seeing a well illustrated (with photos) blog from someone who had done this. Has Google not turned anything up??

As you say, the ABS lights had very nice head units. I still have a set of ABS 30s with two sets of batteries. They occasionally get pressed into service on MM weekend, but don't really have enough burn time for my winter commutes.

A LED conversion would sort that out though

Not quite as much work as the 3 LED jobby, but I used the front internals from the Tesco C cell torch as it fits pretty much straight in.
Just soldered the leads to the plug unit on the back & used the original switching system.
It worked OK but as I didnt have flood or spot lenses they both had similar light spread, sadly they both got destroyed in a stupid crash that tore the bases off.

Sorry for small hijack; What about one of the older ABS 10 model lights, would something similar be possible for them?

Mr Overshoot.

That is one very neat conversion. That light looks great.

stayhigh - I think the light housing units were the same across the range?? It's one of the enduring features for me, they are pretty tough! Get hot with the 20W halogen running though! Enough to cook wet mud on the front of the lens.

Not sure about the battery packs, though, they might have changed to NiMH as the wattages were increased...?

ABS 10 and 20 lamps had plastic bodies, they wouldn't deal with the heat generated by an led conversion.

I did a similar conversion to some ABS 30's i've got, just a single LED but now quite fancy rebuilding them into 3x LED. Or, just use the housing from a cateye stadium i've got.

Anyway, the chap on here who does batteries did a lovely job of putting 3x 18650 cells into the housing of the original ABS30 light so i've got 7.2Ah @ 3.6v or whatever it is. works really well.

I seem to remember that using the original switchgear isn't the best idea because of the way it is wired if using 2x lamps.
