I noticed at the weekend my camelbak tube has some nasty black stuff in it 😯 any recommendations on cleaning?

Do I stump up the £16-20 for the genuine cleaning kit or is there a cheaper/better alternative.

Miltons Sterilising Tablets, put them in there for 24 hours, flush through, may need another 24 hours. Saves £20 for a new bladder!

Only use water in it, after use just empty it and lob it in the freezer, then do the Milton thing once in a while.

Try also Bicarbonate of Soda.

You need one of the tube / 'gun barrel' cleaning brushes to get the gunk out, sterilising fluid will not clean it on it own.

Also, store your bladder and tube in the freezer between rides, it stops the germs growing.

Milton tablets will sterilise it ok but i don't think they'll actually shift the black stuff. First time i used the proper brush down the tube was pretty revealing. 😯

Better than Milton, try Denture cleaning tabs.. nice fresh taste, not bleach !
Then store in the freezer when not in use..

+1 for Freezer

Use all sorts in mine but always freeze it, never had any nasty stuff in years.

I blast mine with steam from the espresso machine every now and then.

freezing it makes them prone to cracking however, i've had that when filling it before a ride and leaking all over the place. its just as easy to use tablets and get the brush, its not like the brush wears out!

The easiest way to keep it clean is to wash it as soon as you get home. I use nothing more complicated than a good rinse out with hot water and then store it full of water with a drop or two of antibacterial washing up liquid.

I made a thin wire tool to pull lumps of cotton wool through the pipe - much cheaper than Camelbak's tool.

If you have one, a coffee machine - blast steam through the hose.

I've bought a web-tex cleaning kit from Ebay £10 delivered. Will report back to how good it is.

Cheers for all the suggestions, also going to try the denture cleaning tablets.
