Hi worldly mountain bike folk...planning a Cadair Idris ride for Friday, but never ridden around here before so after some route advice. I have heard that a popular mtb route is up & back down the main bridleway - what is this like? Will it fulfil a desire for a big day out in the mountains or will it be done and dusted in a few hours? Any other routes that I should or could consider?

Thanks in advance.

Peach

It's a big ride, mountain-steep gradients in places, big rocks nearer the top, some hike-a-bike required, beautiful scenery. A few hours is a full day out this time of year ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you're planning on going Friday keep an eye on the weather and plan accordingly ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

did it earlier this year with flippinheckler.
a fit bloke should ride up no problem....we pushed a bit,
straight up the main bridleway from the chapel.
a proper blast back down...........enjoy.

I did it in Jan/Feb with a mate & it was a good ride. I think we followed the MBR route that started in a nearby village - Abergynolwyn and followed the bridleway all the way up. There were some slushy bits on the way up & then near the top it was too steep/rocky so there's a fair bit of a hike-a-bike.

Coming back down is great fun; you can really hammer it down the rock steps section.

The BW up and down route isn't a full day's ride - from memory it's an hour or so to push up, about 15 minutes to ride down. Paying attention to the weather forecast is good advice. We set off on a nice-ish afternoon and by the time we got to the top the wind was fairly brisk and the view was non-existent.
