Broken road or Chisel?

So I’ve got the PlanetX broken road Ti copy, Titus Mutsu, only issue is the tailfin rack doesn’t really fit as the rear bolts are catching the rack legs.

As the cycle to work scheme is now open, was thinking of getting a new Broken road Ti frame to replace it.

But having seen the Spesh Chisel frame is only 1.4kg vs 2.0kg of the Broken road, am interested in how the alloy frame rides, a few reviews say sublime. I’m on the crap Halfords CTW though, which rules out some really tasty frames such as Stanton and Mason.

Stanton do C2W.. or are you limited to Halfords-stocked brands (which then rules out the Chisel also)?

You can use Halfords vouchers at some LBS's (no idea if Stanton do).

No experience of the Chisel, but IME there's no truth anymore in the Steel Vs Aluminum arguments, steel frames have gotten stiff and aluminum frames have gotten more comfortable/flexible. The only one I'd still argue is that steel tends to be tougher, and can withstand being blasted and powdercoated so makes better bikes for keeping a long time. Titanium, no idea.

You should definitely buy a bike that takes a normal rack and sell your tailfin to me 😝

tailfin rack doesn’t really fit as the rear bolts are catching the rack legs.

Is that using the lugs on the frame or hub mounts?

I think cheap ti frames are over engineered to prevent then cracking so they can weigh the same or more than a good aluminium frame but still cost 3 times as much.

With regards to how they ride, in my opinion,  a lot depends on what size rubber you can fit in or plan to use.

@boardmanfs18 The benefit of buying a boardman means you won't need to change your username.

Been riding a Chisel the past few months and loving mine. Not as comfy as a Trek with ISO speed but not too far off.

Don't want to sell the Tailfin, sorry Damascus! It was mounted using the axle as the lug mounts don't look that beefy and what with riding off-road etc, Tailfin's advice was to mount via the axle for best security.

I would love to change my username but unfortunately Boardman don't make a lightweight XC frame, I guess.

I've had a BR, now ride a Chisel. Ride of Chisel is good. I rode the Jenn ride this year on the Chisel and certainly wasn't beaten up.

Yeah, why can't we change our username? I chose mine years ago when I owned ... er ... only a hardtail, and never really envisaged being able to afford a FS, so convinced myself I was a Hardtail ... er ... only kind of rider.

But now I'm not, I'm on my second FS now ... 🤷‍♂️

@Clink, thanks for that, how come you got rid of the Broken road? I'll be using it mainly for bikepacking not racing.

I can't comment on the Chisel, but I have a Broken Road and love it. It's definitely a keeper.
I use it mainly for XC rides and bike packing (with a Tailfin) and it is the most comfortable bike I have ever had.
Recommended. 🙂

Agree on rhe positive comments on the BR. Had one a while now and ride everything on it. Loaded unloaded bike park, xc etc. Just did a lap of Norfolk 240 miles 26 hours.
I have also purchased a Travers xc prong for it which takes a kilo off the front end.

I had issues with seatpost slippage. I'm sure it's sorted on newer frames.

Mine is the 2020/2021 model and I haven't had any problem with seat post slippage. A mate has the latest frame (with internal top tube hose/cable routing) and hasn't experienced any slippage either.

Mrs B had a chisel and it was light and sprightly, but she is 65kg. Im about 15kg heavier than her and found it a little flexy when out of the saddle and putring my meagre watts through it.

She ran it with an RS fork and a Travers Prong. She prefered the Prong for multi day bikepack adventures.

Ive ridden a Broken Road and it didnt feel so flexy.
