Is it possible to repair , made a complete ass of fitting an external bottom bracket after cleaning and knackered the thread trying to put it back in

your friendly LBS will probably be able to re-cut the thread if there's enough metal left.
if it's totalled, Argos can ream out the shell and fit a new one for ££££
or there are BBs available that grip either side of the frame and don't need a thread at all (poor quality solution)
